The PS2 era is definitely worth revisiting for Ar Tonelico 1/2 in that regard, also the Growlanser games. Agarest 0/1 are definitely a tough pill to swallow gameplay wise, but I'd check out Agarest 2 - they totally overhauled the battle system and it's quite a different game. You should for sure check out Grandia if you haven't.
