Watson has a much longer career of productive play ahead of him than Bell had. Maybe he holds out, maybe he doesn't, but saying there's no chance he gets traded is also pretty damn silly.

I think your focus on the cap is clouding your vision. The cap can always be manipulated in any number of ways, and if it gets to a point that they need to trade him, the cap implications will not stop them.

Yeah, if they can get a package that they're ok with they could eat shit for a year and have a relatively clean slate going forward. Say they get something like 3 1sts a player or 2 and maybe some mid round picks or whatever. Eat shit and be terrible again, but at least have some real draft capital and cap space moving forward. 2021 will be real bad. But then you'll get to pick in the top 5 or whatever in 2022 and have whatever draft capital from the watson trade between 2021 and 2022 or whatever. It's not perfect, but the team is already on fire, might as well burn it all the way to the ground and collect your insurance.

The cap is the cap. There is no luxury tax or soft cap like the NBA. It can not be manipulated. You have to account for the dead money Watson creates when he is moved and the new cap hits for the players drafted and signed this off season.

You are correct that it is a hard cap. You are absolutely incorrect that you can't do things to manipulate the cap. Yes, they have to account for dead money, but there is lots of ways to free up cap space. Teams do it all the damn time. Look at the Rams as one example. Between Gurley, Cooks, and Goff they have had a shitton of dead cap over the last few years, and yet they still manage to stay under the cap.

According to spotrac the texans have $10m to play with, which is absolutely nothing as previously stated. They have already made a big majority of their cuts by letting go of watt and stills. There are no more players on the roster that will give them cap savings.

it's about 6M more if they trade him before june 1st, if they wait till june 1st to trade him then they can defer 16M to the 2022 cap and actually actually save 10M on their 2021 cap. they have options.

David Johnson is an easy cut that is $6M by himself. You're also only focusing on the total dead cap number and not how much cap space in total is cleared by him leaving. Not that anyone wants to eat dead cap, but in truth this year is the ONLY year the dead cap hit exceeds the total savings on his cap hit, and it's only by like $5.8M or so.
It amuses me when you say $10M is nothing and you can't do anything with it, since you guys are 18th out of 32 teams as far as your current cap situation goes. There are actually 11 teams that are still over the cap right now. I noted the draft picks before, but even in total draft picks don't take up THAT much. The idea that you guys can't account for potentially $5M and change trading Watson would incur for this season is laughable, GM's rework individual contracts for that much cap savings every year, let alone across a whole team.

Yeah I'm not even saying it's likely he gets moved, he could cool off and decide he wants to come back tomorrow for all we know. But if they decide fuck it, full rebuild, they could cut David Johnson for $6M, cut Brandin Cooks for another $12M, and just go cheap on replacements. Right now they have 8 picks in the Draft, but 7 of them are Round 4 or later, and their highest pick is a 3rd. Most of those picks are going to be very cheap to sign, and if they really had to, they could even trade out of some of those picks to acquire even more future picks.
This year is the only year that the dead cap hit exceeds the cap savings on Watson's contract, since his cap hit for this year is actually just under $16M, but next year jumps up to a $40M cap hit. But to think it's completely impossible is nuts, they aren't even close to being in the worst spot cap wise compared to teams like the Saints and Eagles.
