Pretty sure that even when kids are tried as adults they don't immediately go to DDTSP (Don't Drop The Soap Prison) and instead spend a few years in a juvenile facility until they are older at which point they go to DDTSP. The only thing trying them as adults really means is that they don't get a clean fucking slate and the ability to pretend like nothing ever happened the day they turn 18.
