Coughlin's been around long enough (and won the SBs so recently) that he gets the graceful exit plan, ala Andy Reid, where no one will mention what will obviously happen on Black Monday.

To me, the more interesting situation is Eli Manning. The guy has the largest cap hit in the league this season. The entire league.

I can't imagine he goes; I can't imagine that contract doesn't get restructured.
Combination of receivers being retarded (Reuben Randle), dropping balls (Hakeem Nicks), and the offensive line letting him take a beating. They will never blame Eli for what's going on with the offense. Gilbride refuses to adapt the offense and says it's going through "growing pains" and will get over it. Wtf?

How is he supposed to hit him, or he just needs to let him catch the ball and score a touchdown?
I don't agree with fining him, but under current rules I do agree it was correct to throw a penalty flag for hitting a defenseless receiver. At that point I'm not sure what he could have done, maybe stuck his arms out and try to disrupt the receivers hands; he just should have been in better position so he didn't have to hit the receiver mid-air.

This is the hit he got fined and penalized for. Pretty horse shit.

You are not allowed to hit a 'defenseless' receiver in the head with any part of your body. Not your helmet, not your shoulder, not your hand, not your pinky toe.

Whether you like the rule or not is another matter, but the rule states he did deserve a flag and does deserve a fine for that hit.

This. Coupled with the fact that a lot of smaller defensive backs, in order to make up for their lack of size and tackling ability/technique, simply launch their bodies at the defender. Inevitably, that seems to be leading with the head. (Not necessarily in this case; his shoulder hit the guys head.)

I don't want to see a pussified league, and I think there needs to be some middle ground. I'll have to leave it to people smarter than me to find it, though.

No real shocker here
That's what made all the recent bad press so bizarre. By releasing him, the Bucs are entirely on the hook for his current contract, and any money he makes if picked up is just extra cash for Freeman. Furthermore, by releasing him, the Bucs have tossed out any picks they might have received in trade, even if they would have been 5th-7th rounders.

It almost makes me wonder if the rumors weren't spread by some team about to pick him up: They've spoiled Freeman's trade value enough that the Bucs ate the money on the existing contract and didn't get any picks in the deal.

Who gets him now, anyway? Jags? Or Titans if Fitzpatrick doesn't impress in the next couple games?

From everything I've read, the guy was so much of a cancer to the team that there was no way it wouldn't get out regardless. Bad work ethic, drug/alchohol problems, bad production, bad teammate, etc..

pfft, 9-7 last year and watching the playoffs from the comfort of the home. Ok, I can live with that.
0-4, 2nd worse points differential (only Jacksonville sucks more) and probably losing to Philly on Sunday is more than enough to get you fired. 7 points in last 2 games? Gimme a break
Every time people write them off they go out and win a Super Bowl. It's going to take more than 1 bad season to justify firing Coughlin.

Who would realistically be better than Coughlin? Do you try and hire a guy like Cowher or Gruden? Lots of guarantees there...with the decade+ out of football between them. Lovie Smith maybe? You aren't going to promote/hire a coordinator to replace Coughlin and his rings after 1 season in the shitter. I cannot see the ownership going there...this isn't Al Davis at the helm.

If things really start looking bad for the long term he'll probably opt to legitimately retire, he's the oldest coach in the league iirc.

Gruden and Cowher are never coming back to the league. Their jobs are way cushier now and probably pay just as well.

Often times when you're at the professional level (NFL) there are stronger incentives than money to do things.

Well, the trouble with Freeman was that he was just never consistent. There were times he'd be on fire and you would think 'Wow, he's got some talent in there" and then other times he would go full Romo and you would just shake your head. Some people blame the changing of coaches, players, etc. But at the end of the day, the players have to produce results, just as the coaches do. From what little I heard about Schiano before he came here, he definetly seemed like he would bump heads with some of the players. Morris was too much of a nice guy to the team, Schiano is probably a shock like a bucket of ice water compared to him.

Hopefully things will get better, would be nice to at least see more wins than losses.

I don't know whats true and what isn't true about Josh Freeman, but I do know that my perception of Greg Schiano is that he is one of the worst head coaches in the league and a gigantic faggot to boot. I feel like he so badly wants to blame someone else for the team being 1-9 in their last 10 games that he'll go to any length just to throw Josh Freeman under the bus as much as possible. In fact I've never heard Schiano take accountability for anything, not even when he single-handedly lost the Saints game in week 2 by making possibly the dumbest decision I've ever seen a coach make in a football game.

Changing OCs all the time definitely has an affect on a player's game. Alex Smith is the perfect example. Not saying Freeman could be good, because he probably does suck, but coaching does have a large part of it.

Not happy with the defensive injuries piling up for the Bengals at all. So on top of scrubville secondary, it looks like Vontaze Burfict and Michael Johnson may be out too. I was thinking the Bengals had a legit shot at taking down the Pats, but not without two of the defense's best players - especially Burfict. Fuck.

Kirkpatrick is supposed to be back though. Yay?
