I think the hit job the Saints put out on him is what finally broke his will. That and AP getting pouty and coughing up the ball four times because he was not the center of attention. Blowing a golden opportunity like that and getting kneecapped for an entire game has a way of taking the wind out of your sails.

I can't imagine that if the Rams really did contact Favre they did it for no reason other than to get publicity? I mean, would they really think 44 year old Favre would come out of retirement to play for a team that has a 0% chance of making the post season, much less a super bowl run? Not that Favre would even come back to play for the Seahawks or Chiefs.

Well first they were talking about Tebow and now Farve. It does seem like they are trying desperately to get certain 4 letter networks to talk about them for whatever reason.

Or maybe he got bounced because we had a shitty offense that hasnt been improved since the Sid Luckman era and he kept focusing on defense, even though defense has become less relevant in the high octane, high scoring current era of the NFL.

Basically Lovie was a dinosaur and in fact his inability to beat the Packers is what probably got him canned eventually. His record in the last 11 games vs. the Packers was 2-9 with Packers winning the last 6 games.

The guy has taken nobody failures and turned them into a formidable line. RG3 isn't wrong. The NFL can only get what college football is producing, and it isn't traditional pocket passers. Look at all the top NCAA teams and QB prospects, Jameis Winston at Florida State, Johnny Football, Marcus Mariota at Oregon, Brett Hundley at UCLA.

the QB position now takes very athletic players to play it well at the college level, and the NFL will follow suit by default. Look at pure pocket passers in recent drafts (Gabbert, Weeden, Barkley, Ponder, etc) compared to guys who can run as well (RG3, Luck, Wilson, Kaepernick, Locker, Tannehill, Cam Newton, etc)

It's very, very obvious what direction the NFL is going. The days of the immobile pocket passer(Manning, Marino, Bledsoe etc) are numbered

His reasoning is correct though. Colleges are going to running QB's and that's where your NFL QB's are going to come from. The fewer D1 pocket passers getting to start, the fewer of them will be standing out enough to get drafted. And drafting a running QB is probably a safer option for a head coach looking to save his job, if he sucks at passing you can just keep pretending he has that mythical upside and ride that out for a few seasons.

The hype machine churns out a new QB to be the "projected #1 pick your team should tank their season to draft!" after every highlight worthy game someone turns in, and the best way to build a highlight reel is to break off a few big runs and just fling it down field against lesser competition.

Running QB's in college are just more idiot proof, too. When you combine the fact that most college defenses are terrible with the average quality of defensive players being way worse than offensive players at that level along with a much more pass/QB friendly game, good runners with limited quarterbacking talent can still put up decent numbers passing. Didn't some kid just pass for 150 yards and run for 300 last week? Why not just put your best runner under center if you are a subar college team? Probably your best chance of winning.

All you need to know about Lovie Smith, why the Bears fired him, and why nobody else has hired him is in his record.

Against sub five hundred teams: 49-15 (great!)
Against five hundred teams: 11-8 (Decent)
Against teams that were or went better then five hundred: 19-38 (fucking pitiful)

Those are numbers where compiled when the bears were 8-4 last year. Who the hell wants a coach that is just good enough to seem like he is getting good results, but can't win when it counts. Not many division races or playoff games are played against teams with sub five hundred records. If you can't beat the good teams then whats the point of keeping you around as a coach.

Bears defense this year is a heaping pile of shit though, so at least Lovie could have gotten that right.

That's pretty much every coach and team. Guess what, the opponents of teams with a .750 win percentage only have a .250 win percentage! Also why pretty much every coach in the history of coaching has a worse record in the playoffs than in the regular season. Because you don't play any bad teams in the playoffs.

For comparison Mike McCarthy had gone in seven seasons...

Sub 500: 35-12
500 teams: 10-3
Over 500: 21-25

So thats your biggest rival in the NFL under their current head coach with a similar record against bad teams (Lovie is slightly better), a better record against average teams, and a much better record against "good teams" relative to the Lovie lead Bears. Yes I know that most coaches are going to tend to have losing records against the better then five hundred teams. However its how far below that mark you are, and Lovie when compared to those that are considered good to great as coaches has an abysmal win rate against the good teams.

Big assumption lovie could have done anything with this defense. This is nothing more then a defense that is older and never got replenished because of wasted Draft picks. It's finally caught up with the Bears.

You could argue that Marinelli could coach up the injury replacements, as he has done in Dallas with cast off's and no names like George Selvie, Caesar Rayford, and Ray Nevis.
