Steve Young is still making $1mil+ per season from his first contract he signed... in 1985

How Donald Trump Made Steve Young $1 Mil A Year 'Til Age 65 | SportsGrid

After his bonus, Steve would earn just $200,000 in year one, $280,000 in year two, $330,000 in year four and $400,000 in year five. The remaining $30 million would be deferred over 37 years starting when Steve turned 28 and ending when he was 65 in the year 2027.
Just to be safe, Steve's agent [Leigh Steinberg] insisted that the contract be insured just like any other annuity that you would purchase from a bank. That meant Steve's deferred $30 million was covered "in case the team or the league folds". This final deal point would prove very wise.
Now that's some crazy shit.

I doubt Young would have been one of the guys to go out and blow his money on rimz and shit, but considering how most NFL players go through their money and wind up broke in 5 years after they're out of the league that would be a pretty good way for a lot of them to have their pay structured. On the other hand, half of them would probably go to one of those shysters at 1-800-Cash-Now and cash in the annuity for 25% of it's value.

You can do that in the NFL as well from what I recall, unless you're in the NFC East in which case John Mara would be sure to fine the team draft picks and salary cap after the league approves the contract.
Fortunately, it seems like karma came back to bite the Giants in the ass the last year and a half, here's hoping it continues.

Holy shit, how did Young get a 30 million dollar contract in 1985? That would be a record-breaking, historical contract at that point in time.

From a LA times article from 1985:
But in total dollar terms, New York Giant linebacker Lawrence Taylor and San Francisco quarterback Joe Montana have the largest contracts.

Taylor signed with the Giants for $6.46 million over seven years. Montana, who has led the 49ers to two Super Bowls in four years, signed a six-year contract last August worth $6.3 million.

It was. If you read the article it was basically a pissing match between Donald Trump and some other uber rich guy and Young was the beneficiary. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy really.
