I would imagine they have an offseason for the mental health of all the players and staff. You figure during the season, they're essentially completely gone from their families. I mean, sure, they probably see them a few hours after practices on Mon/Tues of away weeks, and most of the home weeks. But I've heard of coaches who sleep in their offices for the entirety of the season.

Giving them an offseason to do whatever and blow off some steam seems like a decent idea. Whether they would get more or less time, I don't know. I also don't know how you can blame ACL injuries on offseason prep. I'd say it's more likely that the artificial surfaces have more to do with it. The newest field turf apparently plays a lot faster than grass, so you're also talking about cutting faster. That seems like it'd be a good recipe for knee injuries.

It's been speculated that the recent influx of ACL injuries are due to the change in the off-season plans,I don't agree or disagree either way
I didn't blame that.

People could still spend time with their families easily, they wouldn't have games to play on the weekends, they would work 9-5 like normal humans.

You do know the recent CBA reduced the amount of practices, not increased, right? If anything it's going the opposite direction from what you're suggesting.

Then I guess I have no clue what the shit you're talking about. You said you wonder why there's even an offseason, and I pointed out that there's even less training, practice, and preseason now than there was a couple years ago.

I don't really see what you want the 53 players per team to be doing 9-5 or why the union would ever go for something like this

This is, what, week 9? The offseason has to be totally irrelevant after 2 months of real football games.

I hate to make it seem like I agree with players like Brandon Meriweather and James Harrison, but maybe there's something to it when some of these dirtier guys mention possible side effects of the new rules in the league. Maybe playersaregoing for lower hits than they would have done in the past to leave nothing for the official to throw his flag for helmet to helmet, defenseless player, etc. Best way to take a guy down low is indeed his knees...

Aren't weekly practices cut down on, as well as off-season?

I was thinking about this myself, if the reductions in workout/practices is part of why we're seeing so many injuries. But I'll admit I don't know enough about that kind of thing to say for sure.

The field turf is a legit concern as well, it should be easier to see if there is more of certain turf types in 2013 than previous years though, right?

If someone was inclined they could probably gather some stats on how these ACL's happened and see what's more prevalent. Cutting, piles, low hits/tackles, field, etc.

These guys are paid millions of dollars to be some of the strongest and fastest human beings on the planet. There really is no offseason, these guys are working out hard year-round. There just happens to be a few months of the year that they are doing it on their own, rather in team-supervised workouts.

Long gone are the old days of the NFL where the pay was so low that guys got other jobs in the offseason.

I forgot who it was, but one NFL player who was making like 2/3 mil a year got a job at Jimmy John's doing janitorial stuff because he "wanted to keep out of trouble" and "tell his kids he worked a real job". Respekt.

Exactly, so basically what I said is. "I wonder why it rains" and you said "RAIN CLOUDZ R PUFFY". AKA Not relevant. Jesus Christ you're daft.

Pretty awesome that DeCastro in basically his rookie year is rated the 3rd best G by PFF.

At least our OL is looking better on the interior. This Velasco dude who the Titans cut is also a beast. He has allowed 1 sack and 3 hurries all season. Hoping that next year Velasco stays at center, and then we move Pouncey to guard....talk about a beast interior. Now if we can only find tackles who arent awful to keep Ben from getting killed.

The point is that the players don't want to be the that often and the owners are ok with it. The benefits of 9-5 year round are that it "might" lead to less injuries while the down side is they have to show up for 6 more months a year.

So basically it's a shitty idea that neither the players nor owners want and there's nothing to be gained by it

I almost lost it at one of the comments on PFT reporting the same thing, apparently its only an 8 game suspension instead of 16 and someone asked "Does this mean he is eligible for the playoffs if the Jags make it?"

Though on a serious note, some team needs to take that kid and give him the Dez Byrant treatment (Team officials surround him 24/7) and make out like fat cats with a damn good WR for cheap. Honestly if I was on the Jags I would do drugs as well.
