As a Pats fan, I have to admit, that the play itself was fubar from the start. There was a slim, extremely slim chance he could have gotten to that ball even without the hold, and the DB directly in front of him.

Now technically the flag should have been thrown and not picked up, and if this was in Foxboro it would have stood as PI.

Totally off topic. Also, didn't check if posted yet.

I'm not much of an NFL fan. I checkup who wins online, read some stats and columns, but that's about it. I don't watch any of the games. This goes the same for about any sport besides college basketball(and I realize that's a tad hypocritical based on what I'm about to link).

What do actual NFL fans feel about how much public money goes into NFL stadiums?

I'm glad I live in the only state that was fully privately funded. But should the NFL, which is wildly profitable, be publicly subsidized?

Sorry if this is the wrong thread, thought it was interesting. It's a facet of the overall problem(too much money in the sport) that keeps me from being more of a fan.

Time to part ways with this coaching staff. I'd like to get rid of RG3, to be honest, but we threw way too much away for that.

WELL FIRSTLY that chart is kind of incorrect, they mention it at the top but then still call it NEW YORK in their graph, NYJ/NYG are from New Jersey. The Bills, the only team in NY, used 63 million of tax payers dollars to do work on the Ralph.

It makes sense for governments to invest in football stadiums. It stimulates the economy of the surrounding area, jersey sales, tailgating, alcohol, food, etc.

and no.

Technically.

The flag should have never been thrown to begin with.
But it's always great when you have dipshit Patriots fans admitting to the ref bias they receive when playing in their stadium.

While the NFL and it's owners do make money hand over fist, it's not like the community as a whole doesn't benefit. NFL games bring a TON of money to the home city(assuming your team doesn't suck and you actually fill your stadium).

Tons of sales tax revenue, income tax revenue(opposing players have to pay pro-rated income tax in the state/city they are playing in), not to mention increased sales for nearby hotels, bars, restaurants, etc. So while the city often chips in a good amount of money, it's not like they get nothing back for the city besides having their name on a football team.

I'm interested to see how RG3 turns out. Will he go down as the next Rickey Williams(Saints/Ditka gave up 1 entire draft for him) or Herschel Walker(vikings gave up so many picks they basically kickstarted the Dallas dynasty of the 90s), or will he become a perennial pro-bowler, because nothing short of that level of play will ever justify what the Redskins gave up for him.

What will really tell the tale is the shape of the Rams vs the Redskins franchises in about 4-5 years, once all those draftpicks vs RG3 can really be evaluated over time.

Why not? The government subsidizes tons of insanely profitable shit, at least football is something that I like. Much rather my tax money goes to an NFL stadium than some fuckin billionaire CEO's toilet paper roll.

^^^It should come as no surprise that I got that link from an Easterbrook column on ESPN.com.

Joeboo, you mentioned hotels. Easterbrook cites a specific example where Jacksonville is giving $40M to Shad Khan to refurbish his stadium. They are paying for it by taxing local hotels. The money has to come from somewhere. So chances are while yes, to some probably impossible to calculate way, NFL stadiums do help the locality. But it also hurts them probably more.

I guess my hang up, as mentioned before, is the amount of money. I'm betting that the RoI is very very low compared to subsidizing other businesses that employ more people per dollar and produce something tangible. I mean, this is essentially the entertainment version of "job creators" no?

Kansas City, several years ago, tried to get a downtown baseball stadium built and I think part of the tax money it was going to take to do that was going to come in the form of a MASSIVE tax on rental cars in the city. Unfortunately, Enterprise Rent-A-Car is based in Missouri, and they absolutely demolished any chance of that happening. So a cheaper renovation of the current stadium is finally what passed several years later.

Joe, I'm unfortunately(?) old enough to have gone to the first downtown KC stadium, Municipal. It was at 18th and Vine, and parking was as shitty as it is in St. Louis right now. Both the Royals and the Chiefs played there until about 71-72, I think.

18th and Vine was not a very good neighborhood back then, and we happened to go to a Royals game on 'bat' day. Every kid got a full-sized baseball bat. It was awesome, until we got back to our car, and it and everyone's around us had been beaten in with... guess what... baseball bats. Fun times.

No idea where I was headed with this, so, GO CAROLINA!

I think 3-13 or 4-12 is highly likely at this point. A house cleaning would be certain to follow. I don't see how you avoid it. Mike Shanahan seems unlikely to fire his son and his highly predictable and ineffective offense might be the biggest problem with the team right now. The play calling makes my face hurt...like they're too smart to just pound the fuck out of the ball with Morris and Helu. Because abandoning the run when it's literally the only thing the team can do well is fun. So I guess they all go.

Getting the John Mara whiny bitch tax of $18M back will help next year as well. In many places there are just guys who wouldn't be starting on most teams. Secondary is ghastly, etc.

Long term, the owner needs to make sure that Griffin does not have a personal bat phone to his office. Based on the ego and stupid shit he kept pulling in the media over the summer...they need to make sure RG3 is obedient and coachable in a fucking hurry or we're boned for a really long time.
