Near the end of November, several teammates and I were walking into a specialist meeting with Coach Priefer. We were laughing over one of the recent articles I had written supporting same-sex marriage rights, and one of my teammates made a joking remark about me leading the Pride parade. As we sat down in our chairs, Mike Priefer, in one of the meanest voices I can ever recall hearing, said: "We should round up all the gays, send them to an island, and then nuke it until it glows." The room grew intensely quiet, and none of the players said a word for the rest of the meeting. The atmosphere was decidedly tense. I had never had an interaction that hostile with any of my teammates on this issue?some didn't agree with me, but our conversations were always civil and respectful. Afterward, several told me that what Mike Priefer had said was "messed up."

How does someone not get fired for that?

Pfiefer sounds like a real piece of shit. Also sounds like they have been black balling Kluwe. If I was that owner I would can all 3. They sucked this season anyway.

The Kluwe thing is being discussed ad nauseum up here in the Cities for obvious reasons. I've always been a big fan of Kluwe's. He's like plucking someone off this board and putting him in the public eye, but I really think the Burns letter he wrote Deadspin is what did him in. That thing went viral and while funny and appropriate to any video gaming neckbeard, it didn't contain much tact for someone in a more public position.

I think everything Chris is saying in this latest article is true, but he comes across as an entitled brat through a lot of it. The issue isn't about marriage equality anymore. It's about him being treated unfairly in the workplace. This Pfiefer guy sounds like a total nut job, but how long would the list be of NFL coaches/coordinators/assistants that made homophobic comments over the course of just one season? Those guys are in a generation before Chris and ourselves. They got their values from their parents. This doesn't excuse comments like that, I think they probably just happen all the time and while thats shitty isn't going to change with anything but time.

A more progressive franchise could have marketed Chris to the younger crowd more, but we're anything but that. The truth is the team didn't like how much attention he was pulling and combine that with his mediocre punting numbers and they cut ties. I really don't think management (outside of Pfeifer) had any issue with his stance just the method.

Yeah I know Kluwe (in passing, he is a miniatures game nerd in cali too) and he has always been outspoken, but honest. He more or less knew what he was getting into when he started speaking publicly on this issue, but the impression I got was that he knew his career was winding down anyhow and wanted to make a difference on the way out. Considering all the shit that went on while he was their punter that he kept clear of (boat full of hookers being my favorite highlight), its ironic that Frasier being and Pfiefer being bible thumpers is what got him canned. I mean AP has a kid he never even knew about and is lionized when the kid dies, but Kluwe gets the axe for speaking on Marriage Equality?

Also, he had one mediocre season in an eight year span where he was inarguably the best player to play that position in Viking history. Realistically, they could have renegotiated his contract before wasting a draft pick in the 5th round, especially when they clearly have so many needs on that team. While I am sure that the Vikes more or less black balled him, I don't think they really had to. The old boys network that is the NFL is not exactly going to scoop up a veteran punter with a record for being outspoken, so that part (as he stated) is pretty much on him. Him getting fired in the first place is clearly a case of Frasier and friends getting their jimmies rustled, though.

The main problem is that is where most of us get our internet from. Cable companies will just boost the price. I know that abc.com starting on January 6th is going to require you to sign in using your cable or sat credentials to watch their shows. Until our fucking government actually allows serious competition we will keep getting the short end of the stick.
