Punter did the right thing, to be honest. Should have been an incomplete pass, intentional grounding, and Colts ball at like the 40 or something.

It looked to me like he was about to try and pass the ball, but it was knocked loose before he could really get into the motion and he ended up just pushing it forward in the air after the fact.

I don't think it's dumb. The best outcome for the patriots is a safety followed by a defensive hold. The worst is 9 points with the colts having the last possession. If the punter downed it, it's 3 or 7, but with a chance for a last drive for the Patriots, with a potential +4 or +7 outcome.

Ball was in the air going forward when the colts defense batted it out the back of the endzone. What else would you call it?

If the ball goes out the back of your own end zone, it's a safety.

It was, but it was fumbled forward (or knocked loose), not a pass attempt. I think that was what the ref conference was all about.

(b) the ball first strikes the ground, a player, an official, or anything else at a point that is nearer the

Note: A ball that is intentionally fumbled and goes forward is a forward pass. A ball that is intentionally muffed,
and goes forward or backward, is a batted ball (12-1-8).The direction taken by a fumbled or muffed ball
does not affect the application of the rules specific to such acts, unless it is ruled that they are intentional.
When a player is in control of the ball and attempting to pass it forward, any intentional forward movement of
his hand starts a forward pass.

causing the ball to go backward, it is a forward pass, regardless of where the ball strikes the ground, a
player, an official, or anything else.
(b) If, after an intentional forward movement of his hand, the passer loses possession of the ball as he is
