Isn't Sansa also a suspect in Joffrey's murder though? She can't really claim anything while the Lannisters are still in power.

Just another reason for the North to rally behind her. The North remembers.
The North remembers betraying the Starks and siding with the Lannisters? One more reason why she can't claim anything with the Lannisters in power.

If she marries Harrold "Arryn" then kills Littlefinger in the inevitable rape scene, she'll have The Vale and claims to The North and The Riverlands.
Yup. But I think they'll develop her character, show her being a huge asset to LF gaining power in the Vale and then she'll deliberately fuck his world up the same way he kills Lysa, but possibly also the same way he killed Ned/Robert Aryn/Joeffrey.

As far as the north/Sansa/Stark vs Lannisters, I think Daenarys/Griff will work that out.

Only the Boltons and the Freys really betrayed the Starks, right? They'll get what's coming to them.

I'm not convinced, i still believe shes some sort of red herring-esque character that is only there to make you think she'll build up to to her possible potential but never actually will.

So Im on chapter 41 of 72 in the first audio book. I'm enjoying the extra thoughts we hear from characters and it's nice to see the differences between the books and the show. Thus far though I'm not seeing that I missed out on a whole lot from show to book.

Season one was extremely close to the contents of the book. Once you get started on A Clash of Kings, you'll start to notice some real differences.

book/season 1 is probably the closest the series gets. It starts diverting after that. Big time come season 3/4 (mainly 4)

House of the Undying was the biggest omission from season 2 (imo). Obviously it wasn't completely omitted, but it was severely neutered from the book version. I guess we did get the vision of the wintery iron throne, but all the juicy stuff didn't make the cut.

Tower of Joy flashback is probably the biggest omission from book to tv show in season 1.
The lack of flashbacks in the show is disappointing.

They could include it in a prequel season. If they want to keep adapting GRRM's work after the main series is over, a season of Robert's Rebellion would be incredible. The battles at the Trident and Tower of Joy alone would be worth it. Imagine being able to see this play out:

They should do a prequel theatrical release before the final season. That would be awesome.

So I'm reading book 4 for only the second time since release and the first thing that jumped out at me was the publish date was fucking 2005. The second thing was.. what the fuck is this guy in oldtown supposed to be on about?

At the beginning there's this long pointless chapter from some failure of an apprentice maester that ends with him selling a key he stole from an Archmaester to ??? who then kills him. I seem to remember never finding out what the point of this was, other than introducing a bunch of people that are never shown again.

That prologue is the reintroduction of Jaqen, who we can probably assume will cross paths with Sam in Oldtown.
