I think he is relieved that HBO is finishing the series for him. Takes the pressure off, and he knows his fans will get the ending no matter what happens to him, and he is going to be super rich either way.

The HBO series was his escape hatch; he can go on with stuffing his face at conventions, wiping his ass with hundred dollar bills, editing Wild Cards, writing those one sentence endorsements of other fantasy authors that are boldly proclaimed on the cover of their books, and doing whatever the hell else rich authors do in their free time. He sold us out to HBO, because he might know the ending of the story, but he has no idea how the hell to get there and hasn't since the end of Storm of Swords, so he is letting HBO figure it out for him. Maybe it didn't start that way, but that is what it turned into.

Bro, I'm sure you're a great guy, but every time I skim over your name I see "Fatgoliath."

I just feel bad for the people who read the first book when it came out in the 90's and have been following this thing for nearly 20 years. I mean think about that - a child born on the day the first book was released has finished high school, can vote, can join the military and is able to legally buy cigarettes and alcohol (except in America I guess, cause you guys are weird, but everywhere else).

I've been reading the series since 1999 and it honestly doesn't bother me. I derived a lot of enjoyment from the series thus far and the speculation between books and while it will be unfortunate if he doesn't finish it, it doesn't change the any of the positive experiences I had over the last 15 years reading and rereading the books. He has also put out a lot of content in the asoiaf universe last two years (The Princess and the Queen, The Rogue Prince and just a few days ago, The World of Ice and Fire.) It's not a replacement for The Winds of Winter but I enjoy having a lot of backstory explained and its clear he is still interested in the universe and actively writing about it.

Has anybody read the World of Ice and Fire? It's just an encyclopedia of sorts right?

I picked it up in 2005, the delays used to bug me, don't give a shit anymore. The TV series has something to do with that in some way even though I haven't even bothered to watch past Season 2(I disliked their version of the Sack of Winterfell). Even at my extremely casual pace of reading books, I read them faster than authors put them out, so I'm just used to switching between series. When/if the next GRRM book is out, I'll switch back to this series.

I think I started in the same year, read through the entire series at the time over the course of a summer holiday. Man that was a good summer, such blissful ignorance.

The last two books killed my yearning to see more books. Sure, plenty happened, but nothing that moved towards a conclusion in my opinion; things just got more and more fragmented. Storylines went nowhere. The last two books will have to wrap things up a lightning pace compared to books 4 and 5, and that feels cheap. We can tell by what storylines the show is ignoring that several of the storylines aren't going anywhere and should have been completely cut.

At least, because of the show, we will know how the story ends.

I can agree with this, I didn't even finish Dance, after excitedly waiting for it for years.

I set my nook on fire and then refused to read the written word for six months after reading the prologue of AFFC. I killed 11 hobos with beards just for looking like GRRM. I stopped having sex with my hot twin out of protest...he was relieved. I angrily tore off the crudely fashioned cardboard wings I had stapled to the back of my gecko, Lizgar Targscalian. I beat a dwarf in to a coma with a trencher full of pork and fat drippings that was glistening in the torchlight. I haughtily dismissed the team of eunuchs I had been training for years to guard me...biggest waste of puppies ever.

I've just started reading it. The physical format is reminiscent of a Pathfinder RPG book which isn't what I expected, with some nice pictures. It's basically a history of the world as written by a Maester, and because of that don't expect many revelations. Giants and the Children of the Forest are extinct to him, while the Others are almost a myth. The vast majority of the book covers the period from the Doom of Valyria to the near present.

Oh and GRRM managed to get to page 5 before using "little and less," although pages 1, 2, 3 and 4 were pictures.

The conspiracy theories are going hard with this. Apparently the 12 days of christmas ends on dec 21, the first day of winter, Winter = TWOW!!!!!!

Or he's just saying winter is coming. Either way.

If it's not out before the 2016 game of thrones season might as well throw in the towell and let HBO finish it.

I got the "World of Ice and Fire" lore book for Christmas, seems to have literally everything in it. I read the first half which is the entire history of Westeros/Valyria (lots of Dragon/Valyria lore, very little on White Walkers/The Wall) and what each Targaryen king did. Second half is descriptions and lore bits for each of the Kingdoms and other cities/states in the world. I haven't read that yet but I did skip ahead to read about Asshai which sounds fucking scary and epic; there are no laws, children can't be born there, all animals die, nobody knows who built the city which is only 1/10th full, there is a ruined city out in the shadow...

One interesting tidbit is that Tywin's wife was sent home from court by the queen because she thought that the king was/was going to fuck her - she gave birth to Jamie/Cersei the year after. It also describes a tournament at Casterly Rock the year before Tyrion was born and the king making sexual jokes about her breasts in front of court. It only gives strength to rumours of a Lannister being a secret Targaryen.

The HBO show writers know the ending already, I think he's just going to give up after twow, even IF he manages to release that book concurrently with the 2016 show season, there is no possible way for him to write another novel 1 year later.
