Bloodlines thinning out being the cause of reduction in the overall power levels is briefly mentioned (possibly speculated about) in the first trilogy I think. Vin's relative power level as a Mistborn was so much lower than *spoiler?* because his abilities came from the original source the same way the original Mistborn came into being, while hers were inherited generations later.

Edit: Weren't all the Noble houses descended from the original Mistborn? They were trying to keep the powers within the family, that's why having kids outside the family was a big deal? Dilution of the blood lines? Spreading of the powers outside the Noble houses?

What even are the spoiler rules here... those original 3 books have been out a while relative to the Wax and Wayne ones.

I found the first half of Way of Kings to be incredibly tedious and slow, I almost didn't finish it at the time. The payoff at the end was worth it though. Oathbringer is very similar, it really picks up towards the end. WoR doesn't suffer this problem nearly as much if at all, it's far better paced. The end of Oathbringer is way more epic than WoK though.

For that reason: WoR > OB > WoK

EDIT: Re: Spoilers. Just put spoilers behind tags to be safe. Yeah it's been a long time, but books aren't like movies in that they take a long time to consume in comparison. Thread reader beware as usual though.

Treat it like a common courtesy thing.

I also found the first half of TWoK to be pretty slow and i was struggling to remain interested, (i think i feel this way about literally every series i've read's first book though)

Wasn't Kelsier one of the most powerful mistborn born in ages? And it's been a while but iirc he was a bastard. I mean he did rip the spikes out of an Inquisitor at one point. Though that could be it, especially since all of the mistborn in the original trilogy were dead by the end of it. Still, I'm kind of expecting one to show up at some point, since they're the iconic 'character' of the series, but I could be wrong.

IIRC:
Kelsier wasn't necessarily the strongest, just one of the most skilled. He had lots of practice using the skills (particularly iron and steel) because he was extra motivated to take down the Final Empire, so he spent a lot of time practicing compared to nobles who perhaps weren't as diligent.
Vin wasn't any stronger than Kelsier in her general powers, she was just more of a 'natural' at understanding them and learned quickly. She also had the benefit of bronze hemalurgy with her earring. Obviously this changes in the 2nd and 3rd books.

Spoiler for future books
the next series in the mistborn after wax/Wayne will be set in earth 80's during a cold war and there will be a mistborn serial killer.

The reason there are no mistborn during wax/Wayne was that dilution of the sDNA and I believe harmonys influence as well. This is why there are a lot of twinborn, with one allomancy and feruchemy power. The Set in the wax/Wayne books are trying to use hemalurgy to breed a new mistborn

The impression I have always had was that Vin was especially powerful. She was probably ultimately less powerful than Kelsier, mostly due to experience, but even then was able to challenge him in things she shouldn't have been able to like pushing. She was able to hang with Elend even though he got his powers from lesarium, which should give him a pretty dramatic power boost. I think it may have something to do with her hemalurgic spike, as well. It's never exactly spelled out. Even the legends of her in the Wax and Wayne times put her at pretty dramatic power levels. She wasn't able to hang with the Lord Ruler, of course, but that compounding shit he did plus him being the source really makes him a different kind of thing.

They never say, but it is implied, that the Lord Mistborn was the last mistborn, and that's been 300+ years

Glad I am not the only one thinking OB was a little lacking. Still can't wait for the next one though.

I have not read Wax and Wayne series, but most of the speculation about the Mistborn series is answered in the books themselves. Chapter summaries on Coppermind are a great source of information if you need a refresh.

Elend is who I was referring to in my previous post. It comes up a few times in book 3 where it's mentioned his allomancy is more in line with the power levels of the original Mistborn due to getting his abilities directly from the source metal that Vin fed him at the Well.

I suspect there's also something more complicated than standard genetics at play for those born with allomacy, or at least the ability to manifest it. It's weird that allomancy seems to be a one-or-all power system. Standard genetics wouldn't be that cut and dry. Probably some Spiritual/Cognitive realm shenanigans going on that we haven't learned about yet is my guess.

I thought it was the other guy. I can't remember names or details that well, because it's been quite some time. Marsh I think? The one who went in and got all the spikes and shit. I can't remember what they're called

marsh is 100% alive and working for harmony, but per the end of the last wax book, and the secret history it looks like kelsier found a way back and may still be running around too.

Mistborn + Stormlight Spoilers
Yeah I remember Marsh still being out and about. I really enjoyed Kelsier's novella but I'm curious if he's going to show up in mistborn again or not, or one of sanderson's other cosmere stories (Like how we've seen some warbreaker characters pop up in The Stormlight Archive). Especially since his after-death novella seemed to heavily involve some cosmere shenanigans that we really don't understand, as far as I remember anyway. Though I love the character and can't wait to see where he end's up coming back.

Ah wow I didn't even catch that. Do we know what they were doing or why they were there? Maybe I missed a book but where does it explain that or what was going on in general? I know there's lots of hints dropped throughout his novels about the goings-on in the meta-universe but I don't remember anything that really ties it together yet or explains what's going on besides for a general fight over the shards.

Because nothing does yet. Supposedly he's got a Hoid book planned for the distant future but for now the Secret History thing is about the closest we get to a behind the scenes look of the Cosmere in general.

oathbringer introduces a lot of intra-cosmere trade in the cognative realm. So we get some more into the general cosmere.

It's not Cosmere, and I think it's YA. It's supposed to actually be part of another universe that he has books in.

Concept is interesting, and I preordered it back in May. Apparently he had wanted it to be in the Cosmere he just couldn't make it work in a way he was happy with. He seemed really excited about the story though
