I don't get it. You guys calling the indians butal, meanwhile they capture the mormon's wife and just feed and take care of her?

Wheres the institutionalized torture, rape, and maiming by the whole tribe that characterized historical events like this?

Its good that they've admitted indians actually killed people, but they're 1000% presenting indians as the good guys and whites as the bad guys here. Just a little bit less than usual.

Natives were brutal as fuck and it's good to see them portrayed as such

Nah some evil white guys put them up to it. It's definitely going the "noble savage" route.

It's got gore and action but it just seems slow and plodding to me.

HBO did Deadwood so much better. Or maybe it just had a lot better actors in it with Ian McShane and Timothy Olyphant. That show was amazing. Especially Mr. Wu. "Cock suckka!"

It was a serous show but it also had a ton of fucking humor in it. Something this show seriously lacks.

The humor is what makes good shows great. Like breaking bad or game of thrones. You can have a heavy drama with a lot of side humor.

The show is brutal and I like that. I think it's a more accurate depiction of the time. However, my biggest gripes are there's no character development. Just a bunch of characters I don't really give a fuck about. Beyond familiar names like Bridger and Young... There's not a single character that I care lives or dies. I also thought it would be more accurate to the history but it's more fiction than historical. As far as the massacre goes... I think they did a great job showing not only how brutal it was but how quickly it ended as well.

My final take on it... It's a good Western show. Slow in some places, great scenes and violence in others and it's lack of character development is annoying. I enjoyed it overall but not going to be champing at the bit for season 2.

Pretty good TV stuff, character development is implied and never forced, brutal to what it most likely was. A surprisingly good miniseries coming from Netflix.

Agreed, I started it off as 'background noise' then stopped what I was doing and watched them all.

It definitely went with the noble savage mythos. But also had a line by Isaac that they are truly savages.

And it didn't necessarily shit on white people so much as it shit on Mormons. Like, really bad. So much so that I feel like someone involved had a major personal issue with them.

Overall I enjoyed it though. My only real complaint is I didn't particularly like the split between two stories essentially, one with Isaac and stupid lady, and the other dealing with the Mormons and Indians (and the fort). I mostly didn't give a shit about the lady at all. So much so that I already forgot her name. And she was really the worst.

The Mormons are not great.

All hail Joseph Smith

Smith never made it to Salt Lake. He was murdered in Illinois.

You have to give them Mormons some credit. They tamed the wild west long before the US Cavalry killed or chased all the Aboriginals off to Canada.

4 eps in, the noble savage bullshit is just over the top. Its like anyone who makes a show or movie featuring indians decides they have to make Dances with Wolves part 324.

That said, whats really odd for me is how the main character was an insufferable retard right up until she got raped. Then afterwards suddenly she starts making sensible decisions and being occasionally even a little badass.

I'm sure they didnt intend this but its an odd thing, what are we supposed to take away from that exactly?

The naivety of women and their inability to recognize danger will get people killed.

I think her acting the way she did before the rape was normal woman behavior but after you learn why she killed that guy back east she would have been well aware of shit that can go down. Then it didn't make sense why she acted like that before the rape.

I took it as some humbling growth moment for her. Some kind of realization that she aint in "civilized" territory no more and that her guide ... is actually a fucking guide.

I think there is something there linked to the boys leg and that brace that they threw out? Cause .. well, Im only finishing up 4 now, but I havent seen any repercussions from not having that on. Nevermind. :trump:

Dude that got his cap peeled back really needs to put another hat on, though. That shit is gruesome looking.

Also, I too am over this shit in westerns. They were billy bad ass'in up on whites as soon as they came into their territory. Portraying them as always the "victim" is getting fucking old. But thats all we've done for the past 25-30 years, let people play the victim.

Yep and a lot of them dumb fucks allied with the losing side in the revolutionary and french/indian wars. Read about the raids in Pennsylvania. There's a reason they got what they got.

Wow this thing ended on a whimper. More or less a typical hollywood ending.

I found it odd how they set up this big funeral pyre for the dude who saved all their lives multiple times, then they light the match and they're like yeehaw, lets ride to California! I dunno, maybe a moment of silence even if you refuse to film the prayers that would actually have been said at an 18th century funeral?

Finished it last night. Wasnt a fan of the ending either. Felt more like they were just trying to set themselves up for a season 2.

A couple of episodes in and it's watchable.

It's no "Deadwood", but interesting cinematography. (1st episode battle scene basically Battle of the Bastards style)

I will continue and try not to look at spoilers. Peter Berg does a great job directing.
