The Sword of the Stranger is probably the best animated movie I've seen in the last year. The musical score is ridiculously good.

all the studio ghibli shit
All of Hayao Miyazaki's work forms the core of studio Ghibli's most successful creations. The stuff that he didn't work on is a very mixed bag ranging from amazing (Grave of the Fireflies) to utter garbage, at least from a both children and adults can love it perspective (Tales from Earthsea, Arrietty).

As for an animation that will always live in my memory: Watership Down. I wish more western animators had the desire and character to create such a film.

For anime: Rurouni Kenshin: Trust & Betrayal. A four part OVA that has none of the lighthearted goofy cartoonishness of the Rurouni Kenshin TV series. This a serious and bloody yet also a very beautiful depiction of Kenshin's dark past and is one of my favorite anime productions. If you didn't like the TV show don't worry as this stands alone and is so different in tone and artistic direction that if you didn't know better you wouldn't be able to connect the two.

The Floating Castle i think its called , its an anime. Saw someone suggest it and i had given up on anime long ago till i watched it and was pleasantly surprised. Generally love watching the Pixar stuff , having kids so they love them and i enjoy them as well. Cant recall any bad ones really. All good in their own right , but if i had to choose if i didnt think it would be good till i watched it. It would be Wall-E , boy was i wrong.

The Hobbit animated, 10x better than PJ movie. Have a taste, bro:

Another clip, the way PJ SHOULD have done the goblins, including the song!

Three movies that impressed as a kid that were still good to me as an adult.

And here is a video reminder of all the animated classics people might have forgotten about.

I would also like to add that I cannot believe the massive memory resurrection you guys have done. I have also seen The Last Unicorn, but only once. I was probably 6 or 7 years old, so this was near 30 years ago. I remember how strange the animation was to me, but I really liked it as a kid. I even remember the TV, the people's house we were visiting and when I asked to watch it again, they said it can only be watched once and disappears. This was also my first run in with a VCR too. I will have to watch this again.

This has to be the right place to ask. Anyone know what this animated movie is?
I remember - vaguely - watching a movie, or parts of a movie, as a kid, maybe late 70s or early/mid 80s. I distinctly remember a scene around a lake where either bad stuff comes out of the lake or comes from around the lake... and the protagonist (I think) is sort of trapped. I also remember some kind of spaceship to be involved later on.

And it's notThe Abyss: The Animated Movie

My older brothers let me watch Plague Dogs when I was like 5. That movie will fuck you up way worse than Watership Down. Based on another book by Richard Adams and made by the same people with some of the same voice actors.

I never saw Watership Down as a kid, I got it when I was like 22, and it still fucked with me. That is violent as fuck for a "kids" movie. I refused to watch Plague Dogs after how harsh Watership was, knowing that Plague Dogs was worse (and reading the synopsis for it). Another ++ to The Last Unicorn, the voice talent for that movie was superb, and the soundtrack by America really helps you get lost in the movie.

As far as surprised, the first Studio Ghibli film I saw was Princess Mononoke, which just happened to be on HBO one day. I watched the whole thing and was like, holy shit, is this that anime stuff that people talk about? Movie single handedly got me into anime and made me buy everything by Miyazaki. I'd have to say that Mononoke/Naussica are my favorites, but Spirited Away/Howl's are definitely up there.

I have actually never watched the movie of Watership Down, but I have read the book like 18 times. Shit is fucking awesome.

Yeah when i was a kid, my dad brought home this weird looking VHS called "Akira" and told me it would be awesome. And he was right. I never really got into anime though because the next one i watched was Wicked City, too much tentacle porn for me. But Akira is awesome. It wasn't until recently that I realized there are different dubbed versions, and the one they play on tv sometimes is full of shit.

Not exactly high art, but it's so 80s and over the top I found it impossible to not be entertained.

WATCH IT, PUSSY!

Also agree on Last Unicorn, that shit was nutso. Also I learned to never peel apples/anything TOWARDS the body from that movie and have never forgotten it.

Nausicaa similarly blew my mind as a kid. I still get a little chill seeing this motherfucker.
