What I don't get is why they never really give captain America new uber gear.. I know his shield is iconic and is super duper, and he is most comfortable with it, but why cant they find some awesome sword from planet whatever made by bob the sword guy or something for him? I am sure a few comics mention this and he does sometimes have a handgun...but really.

Because a sword and shield is stupid. I imagine there is some allegorical reason he uses a shield primarily as well, probably relating to him being the protector of American ideals, defender of freedom, etc. A sword just doesn't seem like it would make sense for him. At least guns make some sense since he is a soldier.
How about they just give him claws to go along with his fighting abilities, world war II memories, and courage? He is haunted by all the loved ones who have died due to him being able to heal and age at a slow rate so this can add to his personality. That sounds like a true superhero.

Cap isn't superhuman, he's peak human condition. So, basically he's the pinnacle of the human race but punch for punch, he'll lose to even low tiered superhumans. But he's also a brilliant tactician. He's as good as thinking on his feet as batman is at preparing.
And his enemies are afraid of him, or at least the have loads of respect for him. Even guys like kang the conquerer make special note of cap.
His power set is a bit vague though. He is the perfect example of being more than the sum of his parts. So while he doesn't have super durability or flight, he regularly jumps out of planes without a parachute. He'll stand toe to toe with hulk or Thor and end up forcing them to submit. I love cap... I am a HUGE cap fanboy but there are plenty of moments where his plot armor is so thick it makes the celestials jealous.

Cap is supposed to be the absolute peak of human physical possibility. Can lift as much as(or more than) the strongest lifter(record is over 1,000lbs deadlift now), run with Usain Bolt, etc etc. But he's a comic character so it all gets moved around as needed for the story.

Space Marines are pretty far beyond 'peak human capabilities' and I honestly don't see how Cap manages to seriously hurt one without his shield, but he's probably a lot quicker and more agile so it sounds like a stalemate. I'm sure Cap has been written beating tougher enemies than an unarmored Space Marine though even without his shield.
guys should read the spiderman vs. cap face off in Civil war. Where even spiderman is very overwhelmed by the tactical and fighting skills and speed of cap..
Cap isn't bulletproof nor does he possess some inherent danger sense. All it would take is a sniper and it's goodnight Red, White, and Blue.
Obviously it suits their purposes for him to be more than the the sum of his parts when the plot demands it considering what he represents but the sad truth is he's nothing more than an augmented human... with a shield.
