He could be covering to make it a big reveal.

If I was Marvel I would have shoehorned him into this in some way, the deal already went through way before release and this would make the Thanos reveal look small potatoes in comparison.

Marvel's President, Kevin Feige, has confirmed that there will be something extra during the credits of Avengers: Age of Ultron, saying:
There will be a tag [a short, epilogue-like scene that pops up shortly after the credits start], but there's not a post-post-credit scene.

Got my ticket for a midnight showing tomorrow, can't wait.

They're showing the first Avenger just before, so I got a ticket for that too, always nice to be able to see it again in a theater.
