How much are you looking to spend?

For errands/commuting a huge thing to consider is if your area is safe to leave it locked outside or if theft is a major concern. If there's significant chance of theft you don't want to invest TOO much because that's just more you stand to possibly lose.

Generally, get something with brazed on bolts for mounting racks. I'm running this set up:

bKeCWEK.jpg

Topeak Super Tourist rack with matching trunk bag. The MTX system is very nice for the bag/matching rack. I can fit a fair amount of groceries on there, shopping for one person and not needing a giant load of shit its very doable with the panniers. Great for picking up a six pack or bringing a growler home from the brewpub. If you are, like, buying like 12 packs of soda and cases of water or big bags of dog food or shopping for a family of three plus....well good luck doing that on a bicycle really. There's also always backpacks for extra load, and you can do front mounted racks/bags for more capacity on the bike. I personally don't like a lot of weight on my back while riding but that varies from person to person, and it depends what sort of ride home you are dealing with as well.

Its on an old (2007?) entry level Trek road bike that had braze-on's in the rear for racks. I have a beefier CX wheel/hub with a 25mm gatorskin (this means nothing to you right?) in back for more durability/strength under cargo load but I could probably have gotten away with stock too.

Ao- is going to tell you to get Salsa or Surly, so I'll just jump the gun on that. Salsa's Vaya or Fargo are built to carry loads, and Surly makes a number of touring bikes that are purpose fitted for bags as well. If you are looking to spend more and have an actual nice bike (and are confident it will be safe locked to a rack) these are really your go-to companies. The Surly Troll is a cool bike that's a bit more on the mountain bikey side.

Otherwise, any old road or mountain bike that can easily accept a rack or racks is the way to go.
Nice, I think I'll grab that Topeak bag/rack. Any idea if it comes in colors (silver)?

Blinging out your der pulleys is a real sign you have a problem man. We are all really concerned for you. Do we need to stage an intervention?

I'm cool, I managed to resist buying matching anodized levers...

Went hiking today in a local MTB spot and saw about a dozen guys on fat bikes. Oh man, I want one so bad.

You could have paid for half of one by the time you were done upgrading that bike.

He's doing with bikes what he gives me shit for doing with guitars.
The hell you say. You trade in shitty stuff for other shitty stuff. I buy badass shit and then make it more badass. GTFO

Edit: Back to the guitar thread anyway. We cool.

Perhaps! But I fuckin' love the geometry on the Scalpel. It just needed a little goodness here and there.

Besides, activity in the cycling thread is always a plus.

It's winter, and I'm in New England. This time of year, I just buy parts.
I went riding Sunday in Dallas at 8am and it was like 33 degrees...

and yes, that was stupid, I froze my fucking balls off. But I did 20 miles, damn it.

I ride all the time in the cold, serious cold at times too like sub zero polar vortex a couple weeks ago. Precipitation is the only thing that really stops me, and I'd ride in light snow or very light rain as well. However, when it gets under about 45 I move to the woods. That wind will cut right through you on the road at those temps. I generally prefer road biking for my daily workout but its easier to keep warm on the trail and the serious winter gear I have is just bulky and inefficient on a road bike.

I don't care about the cold so much. It's that it's about 6* up here right now and snowing, and my local trails are all sheets of ice. Trainer it is.

I did over 1,000 miles on my road bike between August and December, but while I enjoy the road rides I really only do it to get faster in the woods. The trail is just a shitload more fun.

Yeah, I enjoy a nice long ride through winding country roads, but nothing beats fast singletrack for actual exhilaration. Mountain biking is my first love, I came to road riding through getting hooked on trails first. I get a lot less snow in the mid Atlantic than up there but we still get pretty cold winters. I have yet to resort to a damn trainer. At worst I see snow/rain days as forced recovery days. Otherwise I do some sort of ride seven days a week most weeks.
