Nearly 60% drop this weekend, which is in the normal range for this kind of film. Doesn't look like any good word of mouth was sufficient enough to have much of an impact. It's likely to end up with Eternals numbers.

Doesn't seem like a DC savior. I wonder if the Rock's pull will lessen after the way this film has performed.

didn't think of eternals comparison but, it might do better that eternals did in week 3 as don't think anything is opening and week 3 had eternals vs ghostbusters. black adam's climb will probably end in week 4 vs black panther. dc appears great a scheduling, week 4 of shazam was against end game. think the less predictable thing is how well it is going to do Internationally.

This was the Rock's biggest box office opening as a leading actor. The Rock's movies do ok, but they have never been HUGE.

Which is usually great because his budgets are mostly under or at $100 million. That and his international power is why he's a successful movie star. The calculus changes a lot when the budget is 200 million.

It is getting a China release, at least.

Eternals was an MCU film and did shit compared to previous phase MCU films. DCEU is a failed franchise and so black adam numbers is actually not bad. its gonna take a while before people want to expect good stuff from it.

I mean... Aquaman did 1.1 billion. I'd even say Mamoa is a lesser star than the Rock.

It's only going to do 20 or 30 million more than Shazam in the US and that movie had a lot less hype around it and nobody for name recognition. Eternals didn't have any big names or worthwhile existing MCU tie-ins. I think it's a pretty fair comparable.

Only reason it even made that much money is because it opened during the Christmas time period. If it opened in the summer I bet the take would have been 300 less globally. Still much more successful than BA but holiday obviously plays a big part.

i dunno, Mamoa gets women jizzing themselves every time he takes off his shirt. thats a big draw. also Aquaman is one of the prime DC superheroes. i never even heard of Black Adam.

It didn't help his Conan movie. lol. He is a better actor than Rock though.

Most people recognized Chuck in it. Part of the reason we watched it at least, wouldn't be surprised if others were the same.

Just nodding along to this post, i never saw eternals and i totally forgot who was in it. Started to bother me, so then i looked it up. 2nd, 3rd, 4th top billing are pretty fucking well known. Idk who gemma chan is, but she is listed as #1.

Critics give quite a number of popcorn flicks good reviews. Tons of MCU films, wick films, top gun, shit even disaster porn like Greenland got 78% (though honestly it was solid); Shazam got a 90% RT. It's possible for Black Adam to be a mediocre comic book film that doesn't bring anything fresh instead of a new fight in the culture war.
This is about Disney essentially owning the RT critics and trying to kill any DC shit in the crib. Marvel is having huge issues right now. They are vulnerable. So the Mouse is yanking the same levers is does to get critic ratings up on BP and Captain Marvel to try and close any window of chance that the DCU might get out of the gate.

I totally forgot that Jolie was even in this. You are right that there are definitely some recognizable names.

That said, I think there's a difference between name recognition and actually getting people in seats. When's the last time a film that had Hayek or Jolie as lead characters pulled any notable box office? There was Maleficent, but that's about it since Salt. And tons of people know Kit Harington or even Madden but I doubt anybody is going to see a movie because of them.

But overall I think that's just more of a symptom of nowadays there's a lot less true movie stars that people are compelled to see regardless of what they're in.

Show was never higher than 65th place and was on the verge of canceled multiple times. People on this forum might know him but I doubt the general public has a strong awareness of him.
