Off to bordercon this weekend, 4 days gaming convention on the state border, about 4 hours away. 3rd year I've been and it's awesome fun. In some ways it's better the local ones since you're out of town and focused on gaming without the usual distractions at home. Highly recommend people to go to one if they have the opportunity in their area

This War of Mine is really ... different?

It's strange playing a game just to survive, had us kind of wondering what the point was a few times.

Looking forward to playing it some more.

I had no idea they made this into a board game, the components and stuff look really good.

Did you ever play the video game or know about it? Your struggle is basically the point. It's modeled after the struggle Bosnians had during the Siege of Sarajevo. Basically it has the message of the Walking Dead, except without the pesky zombies. Just a straight look at how shitty humanity can be to each other when civilization breaks down and you get to play your part in it. I know I murdered my fair share of elderly couples for their food and ammo playing the game on PC.

I don't feel like I could play something like that anymore. In my twenties probably. Now it would just make me sad I think...

Yeah I remember how the video game made me feel, it was like watching a sad movie the whole time was playing it, it does a great job evoking the feeling of dread, hopelessness, fight for survival, etc.

I am intrigued by the idea of doing that as a co-op board game and I have played narrative games that can be sad, but I don't know about one that is only sad. Gonna have to look into this game a little more, it does seem interesting as a piece of art you experience with your friends.

Yeah, you deal w/ visitors who are sick and they ask for meds, declining them impacts your misery, one of a handful of characteristics (illness, hunger, injury) you can't let hit 4 or the person dies/leaves/kills themselves/etc. A number of hard decisions like that, but lucky for us we didn't have meds so we could tell them bye without feeling as guilty about it, lol. There's a book with a ton of passages like a massive choose your own adventure in some cases, but it's a shitty 'choose how your people are going to die in war' really. One guy got caught in a mortar attack, a few bad decisions on the passages later and an apartment building fell on him. We then ran is a 2-person crew for a bit, but it was really tough, didn't hit any objectives, we were struggling to understand how to even get food and water, but even then with only two we could only scavenge so many items and with us scavenging nobody was defending from the raids that were stealing what food we could manage to find.

It was tough, can't wait to play it again.

Well mother-fucker. Geek Chic has apparently gone out of business. Perfect end to a perfect week.

It looks like I'll be able to get my money back via cc dispute (my credit union is fantastic), but god fucking dammit I wanted that table. Ordering like 3-6 months earlier and I'd have had it, delivery was set for Sep-Dec this year.

Fuck.

However - secondary option for you might exist. Are you into workshop stuff at all? I do have a friend down here that does stuff that's damn near Geek Chic quality, he's only done a few minor mods and kept the overall design towards the simple side of Geek Chic - but I'm sure if you're interested I could get him to email you his plans. (He's treasurer and founder of the local Makerspace - so I'm sure it's well documented for sharing)

I'd love a copy of the plans. Just getting into woodworking and crafting and always wanted to make my own table

I'll try to see if I can get him to email me a copy next time I hit the Makerspace - probably not be till week after next at the earliest though.

I had ordered an Emissary w/ deep vault, no drawers, 3'10" x 6'9" outer dimensions. So if he can make anything like that at similar quality, I'd take a look. From what I understand of their ~8 years of operation, GC was the kind of quality you can hand down to your grandkids, and they theirs. A rare thing in the 21st century.

Tony's design was nearly a pool table in depth (just sans pockets, obv and felt didn't go up the edges) with an insert in design - no drawers/ledges - probably a full foot thick "rim" on the outside for perching drinks and play doodads on.

Dimensions from what I recall sound like his plans go larger though - felt more like something around 10-12' x 6' - he had it on his finished porch (completely finished, zero elements to get to it) and it dominated the entirety of it - it wasn't the hugest back porch ever, but it felt like it dominated the space - with only shelves in two corners and a minikeg dispenser in the third, and the porch exit in the last. Was a big enough table to have three games running on at once without any discomfort. (As we did at that NYE party)

Parts wise I remember him quoting it at about $300 in wood, and $200 in felt. Apparently the "right felt" was a tad on the costly side (you can get cheap felt, but he said if you're not getting casino grade you're asking for disappointment from his experience). He already had every tool imaginable at home or at the Makerspace, so obviously no tools costs wrapped up in that. Assuming there's no glitches in ~18 month old memories. (This is will be following up on an offer he made two NYE's ago)

He's busy as shit though, it would just be plans unless his life has had some massive direction changes recently. He does enjoy helping people build with his stuff, but I doubt he'd want to get involved in the packing/shipping/etc.
