A friend of mine is late to the BB party. He just started watching it this Summer, and got up to the episode with the fly. He loved it, asked me what I thought, and I told him I loved it. I know this ep was trashed on FOH, but you guys never said why.

I also loved the episode with the fly. If you wanted to level some criticism upon it, you could go the route that it did not advance the storyline much at all. BB is a series where there are no wasted episodes or scenes. Every moment builds towards the next. The fly episode seemed to be the exception to that rule.

Well, it did serve even that purpose. The fly episode showed us a couple of important things about the meth-process, about Jesse, and about Walt.

Basically it showed how 90% of what they do is sitting around being bored waiting for a timer to go "ping". And the other 10% might just blow you up if you're not careful about it.

It was a kind of a silly comic relief episode, but it wasn't completely wasted. I kinda think they were going for a "chasing the russian through the woods" episode for the series. Which was also a sort of silly comic relief episode, but not wasted.

When you marathon a show something like the Fly is cool and fun. When you are watching live and you are in the middle of a massive story arc involving Gus, the Cartel, Heisenberg slowly losing it, etc having an episode where Walt chases a fly around and then you gotta wait a week to see more is... annoying.

Imagine next week if they decide to do an episode where they show Skyler and Marie growing up as little kids and how Skyler was always mean to Marie or whatever. Lost did this, literally, many times at the end too.

I tried watching BB 2-3 times and just could not get into the show. I'm recovering from surgery currently and had way too much time on my hands so I *made* myself watch season 1 completely to see what all the hype was about. What the hell is wrong with me?! This show is fucking awesome. I marathoned the shows over a 4 day span and now I am caught up waiting for Sunday with everyone else.

a lot of people cant get beyond the first season because they think its too tame or because skylar is a huge bitch or because a show about a dude dying of cancer is too real or all of the above.

I thought everyone outside of Cranston sucked in season one, Aaron Paul included. I can definitely relate to anyone that had issues at the beginning.

The fly episode was horrible because I think what it accomplished(character development) could have been done while also advancing the plot in some fashion. I've only watched that episode once, but I remember being bored. I have no problems character-based episodes, but putting the breaks on the plot seems hackish, writing-wise. A good character episode is one where you don't even notice the character development yet it's still the central point. In The Pale Moonlight from DS9 is a great example of this.

I must be missing something, but why isn't Saul's "witness protection program" an option this time? Walt certainly has enough money.

It probably is, just no one has brought it up. I imagine that is how Walt is going to get to New Hampshire. But first whatever happens to push him to that point has to happen.

At this point, why would Walt? This isn't like before with Gus. So far, Walt's family isn't in danger. He doesn't have to worry that Hank is going to go after them like Gus was. It's just between Walt and Hank, and whether or not Hank takes him down, Walt believes he'll be dead from the cancer in 6 months regardless, so why put his family through that?

Like chaos says, the option is still on the table (Walt should still have the vacuum repairman's card), but there's really no reason to take what was described by Saul as "an end game".
