So you disagree that in low-income, urban communities that educators commonly make excuses for their students and celebrate their most minor successes while failing to hold them to standards? Let's leave high off the table for now. Is there something about that statement you disagree with?

The high school I went to had college prep courses that, thinking back on it, were absurd amounts of work and required far more time and effort than the college courses they were preparing you for.
No, I definitely do agree that low income urban schools have low standards. I just think that other schools have standards only slightly less low. A handful of the student body might opt to take a handful of challenging courses in secondary school. The vast majority of classes taken by the vast majority of students are going to be designed so that average students who put forth average work will get a B+. That's just how American schools are designed.

intelligence =/= learning mist, it's entirely possible to suppress peoples intelligence by not teaching them things, otherwise school wouldn't work or wouldn't be necessary, you'd just be born with X iq and that would be the end of it. This is especially ironic coming from a person who made a passionate plea not that long ago about the need to dramatically increase the quality of education and something like that not helping or encouraging people's abilities was suppressing them.

You said something like "if even 1 voice was suppressed because they weren't given an oppertunity blah blah blah"
That's my point. We DO need to raise standards in order to raise the quality of education. And the first step to doing that is admitting that the standards we have now, even in wealthier white communities, are abysmally low.

unless they go to private schools,"The public use of reason" is being destroyed in public schools in america in general. All that's an aside from the point that even with those low standards compared to a country like germany, the soft bigotry of low expectations lowers that low bar even more.

So you actually don't disagree at all then with the gist of the article. You just wanted to laugh derisively at current educational standards.

Okay then.

"hold them to the high standards of academic rigor to which their more wealthy, and generally more white peers, are held."

I really just wanted to laugh at this quote, because it really does make me laugh. Pretending that 'white peepul skool iz hard' is a fucking joke.

I think he meant private schools, which since I went to one it was like 96% white to be honest, we started with like 8 black kids but only 2-3 graduated, the dropout rate from freshman to graduation was about 1 in 5.

There's a nice middle/upper middle class white high school with a 95% graduation rate (the one I went to) that is less than an hour away from a dozen schools with sub 50%. The students in those schools are not held to the same standards.

Exactly my point. It's not like these white high schools are flunking kids out who don't meet their high standards of academic excellence. So how can they really be 'high?'

I went to a private high school that has had 100% college acceptance rate for graduating classes for over a decade now. Even the black kids.

Has everything you have ever gone through in your life been miserable? There are nice schools in some places. They exist.

Literally anyone can get into college. My school takes lots of upper-middle class Long Island/NY kids who graduated from nice private schools who weren't smart enough to handle the academic rigors of a real college.

yeah try to get into a good college though. Also I thought "white privelege" in life wasn't that white kids don't fail, it's that they have many opportunities to fail/succeed where minorities only get 1-2, which is illustrated by what you just said.

I'm not saying there are notniceschools. I'm saying that there are not ANY schools that are flunking out 2/3rds of their students. Even if you're flunking 20% of your students, is that really a HIGH standard? Even Ivy League colleges rarely fail out anyone who actually shows up to classes. Once you've made it in, you're pretty much golden as long as you show up and turn something reasonable in.

The US military knows about the definition of high standards. They have no problem cutting the vast majority of candidates from their top schools/programs. I would LOVE to see just one high school or college that was the academic equivalent of Seal training.

The Navy's nuclear school is kinda what you are looking for. The candidates have disproportionately high drop out rates, suicide rates, and commonly burn out after a single tour.

No child left behind is recipe for mediocrity leading us toward our current destination, a steaming pile of rubble and feudalism.
