He didn't say murders don't happen here. But yes, I would laugh at that. In fact, if he had said "sexual assaults don't happen here"--I'd probably be annoyed just like you. But unfortunately Mist, language doesn't magically change just because.Imagine a police chief staring at a body with a knife in its chest, saying "well, murders don't happen here, so thiscan'tbe a murder."
You'd laugh at that right? Sounds like the start of a Fargo episode, right? He's clearly prejudging future cases based on past events, and making a caricature of himself in the process.
Now imagine this police chief has a girl walk in, clearly roughed up and bruised, and him saying "well, rapes don't happen here, so thismustjust be consensual sex that got too rough."
When you're the victim of a crime it doesn't actually matter what past statistics say. Each case has to be judged on its own merits.
To compare it to murder, he'd have to say "Most of what we get out here in terms of dead bodies are natural causes or suicide. That has about as much to do with murder as rangling Ya'll!"...And if someone said that, I would think they were a red neck, I would not think they are dismissive of murder. But perhaps you can tell me why you have to change his language completely just to make a point. Or perhaps you canhighlight where he said rapes never happen here, or they can't happen here? Anywhere, Mist?
