I get the impression it couldn't matter less what characters Marvel chooses to spotlight in their movies. They're movies made more for fans of big, fun spectacle than for comic fans familiar with the source material. Most people who saw Black Panther and GOTG had no idea who these characters were beyond maybe being vaguely aware they existed and were comic characters. More important than the choice of characters is how well they're written and how much fun the movie ends up being for a wide audience.
on one hand, yeah they are making formulaic popcorn movies. on the other hand, a huge reason why i trust them to make enjoyable films is due to how much respect they show the source material. captain america the first avenger wasn't a GREAT film, buy they definitely demonstrated that they implicitly understood what makes steve rogers captain america. same with ironman, thor, hulk... it's what has been consistently frustrating with DC in that even wonder woman, one of their best movies, still didn't actually seem to understand the nuances that make diana the hero that people identify with.
people didn't really know guardians of the galaxy (though, the ones that did know them, enjoyed them for the most part) and there was a lot of doubt that marvel would pull it off, but they handled the characters with care and it showed. we'll see if they continue that
