With a list of cars like that, it sounds like you should be asking that question in the Mid-Life Crisis Thread.

Hey all, I want a fun, 2 seater convertible. Something for the weekends, sunny rides, etc. It will not be a daily driver (I have a truck.) I'd like to keep it under 40,000. I'm totally fine with used and think it's better value

Thoughts
1. A used Porsche boxster
2. Used Jag F type
3. BMW has that new Z4 but prob not much on the used market
4. Miata?? Honest question, is that gay?

So.. in order...

1. This is your answer IMHO, if you can find a good one in your price range.
2. JAAAAAAGGGGGGGGz (Do you plan on stealing silverware from posh parties you attend?)
3. These are really nice, but you're not going to find a new one in your range, and as you surmised I also have not seen a used one of these floating around (admittedly I have not been actively seeking though)
4. Yes, yes it is.

Here let me take care of all that ratchet mid life crisis euro trash convertibles for you and put you in this classy and discerning pussy magnet for you. This thing screams murica.

When you pull up for work you can park in your shitty bosses reserved parking spot and get a promotion for it while fucking the secretary on his desk.

With this car you don’t race, because you know your worth. You casually tip your hat and smile at those less sure of themselves. It’s like the car convertible equivalent of driving a Dodge Ram 1500 4 door with a hemi. You just don’t give a fuck, but still get shit done, and people know it.

At 38k this screaming bald eagle will keep you heavy on respect but stay relatively light on the wallet.

That would be the optimal mid life crisis car IF you wanted to be working on upkeep on your car a lot. I think his goal was something that just required more routine style maintenance needs.

Personally, when all my current house projects are done I plan on tormenting Mrs. Haus Mrs. Haus by picking up and tricking out one of these....

He said not a daily driver cause he has a truck. Didn’t imply he couldn’t work on it occasionally. A lot of these things have been nicely restored. This is the car that he didn’t know he needed until he saw it his whole life

I found a 2016 Z4, not a new one, but still pretty beautiful:

What do you think of that vs the Boxster? Something about a Porsche just seems sexy. Although, for the price of a 2016 BMW Z4 you only get like a 2014 or so Boxster, but not the Boxster S. I want a fun car, for fun, but I don't need a 4.2 second 0-60 car.

I do love old school American muscle cars, but I am the least mechanically inclined person on earth. Beyond putting gas in my truck, or filling the wiper fluid, I'm clueless. And the insecurity of knowing that my car will start every single time freaks me out, because I frequently have to leave one job and go immediately to another job, and even a ten minute delay will fuck my day. If I picked any vintage vehicle, I'd get an old first gen bronco, god those are sexy.

First gen bronco nice. Good maintenance program with a local shop will keep you on top top shape

There is a reason the Miata/MX5 is the best selling roadster and sports car of all time. It does not have a ton of power, but it isn't supposed to. The dynamics and "fun" are great.

A Boxster (I'd suggest an S) is going to be very good, but also higher in price, of course. I'd stay clear of an F-Type. Auto only (if that matters) for the older ones, but more importantly, won't have the same fit and finish and it won't be as reliable. New Z4 just came out so if you find a used one, it will likely have under 1,000 miles and still be priced like a new car.

There's always the Lotus Elise. It's old these days, but light weight, nimble, and direct. Mercedes has the SLK but it's also going to be auto only and repairs out of warranty won't be fun. BMW's 335 convertibles will be fast but out of warranty, I don't know what you're facing. And, of course, a Corvette. Cheap, reliable, faster than all other options listed, can be had in any color with auto or manual trans.

And yes miatas are gay
I see you are a man of culture as well.
The R129 series is one of the most beautiful cars around. Timeless classic.

I want a W126 series one day. 420 SEL or bigger for the 8 cylinder. The "L" because why the fuck not.
Or maybe if I wait long enough and the kids are out by then, R129 all the way. Wheeeeeeeeee!

Literally no one in the world (even hardcore car people) know the model codes for 20 year old Mercedes convertibles.

I ended up going with a 2014 Porsche Boxster S, only 17,xxx miles (my 2018 F-150 has more miles than that!), Agate Grey Metallic exterior, luxor beige interior. Should be here in a couple of weeks. Very excited! Original MSRP was around $71,000, I'm paying around $44,000. This is an expensive toy but I'm thankful someone else took the bulk of the depreciation.

Damn straight we do. Those cars were amazing. I only know a handful though. W123 was the '80s limo, then the W124 middle class, W126 luxury sedan, R129 roadster.

after that it all blurs.

Grats Falxy. Have fun, don't wrap it around a tree or something.

The Miata is gay but I don't really see how it's more gay than any other 2-seater convertible. Those all look like chick cars to me.
