Just reading some of the SD/HD discussion got me to thinking. Why the fuck is there still standard definition? Shouldn't HD just be the standard at this point? Cable companies are real pieces of shit (yes, this is obvious). Do we really need to pay EXTRA for HD channels these days? That should be the norm... we're well past it technologically. You can broadcast free basic HD channels with a simple antenna, but we need a "special" box from Comcast and an extra monthly fee for HD. When are we going to advance from this era?

Fuck, and I came here to see if I should buy a Chromecast or Roku streaming stick. Any thoughts?
You're assuming they'd bring HD down to SD price. They'd just eliminate the SD price and everyone would be paying extra.

I cannot even get HD premium channels where I live and its not a tiny mom and pop cable company either.

I know I'm late to the party, but I finally got one of these. Is everything in this thread still relevant? If it isn't what are the must haves/hacks/etc. for this device?

To add to this even further, can you even buy a SD TV anymore? I dont see them around anymore for sale. Fuck you can get a 40"-45" 1080p TV for like $300 these days.
The only places I see SD tvs anymore is in like cabins we rent out in the summer in northern Michigan.

My grandmother still has a tube TV. Every time I go to her house it's like seeing someone use an abacus or something.

I'm looking for an android hdmi stick will full play store access. Anyone got any recommendations ? There's like 1000 models everywhere and they all come with "quad cores" and shit.

I know it's not the best place to ask but I couldn't find anything better.

Almost every review I've seen about the nexus player was disappointed in it and said the Shield TV was vastly superior, but it's also 3x the price. It's also just an Android TV device, not the full version of android, so it just does video and whatever games that are Android TV compatible.

It sounded like you're looking for a HDMI stick that runs full android and has the play store on it, which I don't know squat about.

I love my Chromecast. Plex works great on them when I need to keep my daughter occupied with something while I'm busy and Sling works great as well to connect the programming on the TV to any other TV in the house wirelessly. Great for slinging a game to the back deck or sending porn to the master bed room.

I guess it depends on what you're looking to run. I don't know that any of them have access to the Play store. The Nexus Player has access to the store, and a subset of apps (most of what you might want, e.g. netflix, vlc, plex) and is a valid cast target.

The Shield TV has faster hardware, but if you're not playing games there isn't much use for it.

Doesn't seem like there's much of a reason to upgrade from the first gen chromecasts which work fine. I guess the audio thing might be cool if you have a stand-alone stereo but you've always been able to do the same thing with a $30 bluetooth gizmo. My main stereo is my AV receiver so I already stream music through my chromecast. I sort of don't like the fact that Google Music streams the songs off the internet instead of directly from my phone though because I have capped internet at home. Probably not a problem for most people I suppose.

Has anyone else had the experience that streaming video to chromecast is kind of buggy from anything but YouTube? I have gone to using the "cast my screen" feature instead of the little chromecast button on other video sites because it seems to hang up so often. This could be something to do with my shitty internet as well though.

I have issues with it randomly disconnecting and closing the app on my phone, other than that I have no issues.

I use my Chromecast to stream from Couchtuner exclusively. I like to let it buffer a few minutes before I watch an episode of whatever. Most (95%) of the time it works flawlessly. If it doesn't, it's usually shitty internet that can't keep up.
