Spring update released a few weeks ago.

Game still full of small issues.

My observations: City states produce almost no units anymore and get rolled over by Civs now.

It appears that the 1-tile wide waterways between the continents and the antarctica / arctic can no longer have ice bergs blocking them completely, turning your three coastal cities into lake towns.

Harbors got buffed
Swordsmen got nerfed
Siege units with generals got buffed (can shoot if at movement 2/3)

Warmongering got changed, the city size now matters when you capture it so destroying some pissant forward settling with 1 pop will no longer ruin your reputation.

How do you guys play this game on Marathon speed? Do those games just last like 6 months?

I wouldn't even care if they lasted this long, what's so fucking dumb about Marathon is that everything takes a hundred turns to build.

Are there any mods out there that limit gameplay to a specific age? Like if I want to do a black powder style RTS within civ6 can I?

I remember being able to cap progress in 5, but it looks like they limited a lot of custom game options in the new one.

I do like 6 a bit more than 5 though. So awesome that there isn't "happiness" anymore. I just wish I could trigger raging barbarians so I felt a bit more pressured throughout the game.

Games not going past classical / medieval / renaissance was also a mod, not an inherent feature in BNW. I used that one myself.

Ah, it's been a while. But yeah, I really like the medieval/black powder stuff and I want to play more in those eras.

Doesn't seem to be a solid modding community for 6 like there was for 5, but I'll be on the lookout for something that caps it.

Also, no single player scenarios?

I haven't played since they nerfed the stacking AOE production bumps. Building anything in this game feels like it takes a fucking eternity.

yeah same feeling here, i have something like 1600 hours in Civ 5 and it still feels like a much better game.

ive tried getting into Europa Universalis but the Clausewitz engine is just too busy/confusing for me. so i got nothing to play when it comes to historically inspired 4x games.

I still play a bunch but I usually play on online or quick speed. No idea how anyone can stand to play this game on anything slower than standard speed.

It's a matter of which X you favor in a particular game.

Long games prioritize explore and exploit. Shorter games expand and exterminate.

On a long game it's rare to find a real threat late, even with high AI cheatmode. TBH long games are only about half as long as the playtime. You know you've won by a certain stage. Civ games always have a break threshold. Difficulty just moves it higher. The back half of the game is basically crushing ants.

Yep, definitely. I will say though, EU4 and CK2 you don't suffer with this problem as easily. Sure, World Conquest in either game is accomplishable and tedious, but generally in those games you're just trying to do something historical or trying to get an achievement - which boxes you into certain content/strategies, where I feel like Civ, especially in 5 and 6, just has 1 path to victory, with just various side paths that just lead to the same main path.

Side note - no idea why people would play Civ6 on anything slower than normal speed - On Slow/Marathon, I honestly can go 5-10 turns where I do nothing but hit Enter to end turn. That's just bad. In previous civ games, like 4, Marathon speed felt fine because you do a ton of actions each turn (worker improvements, specialist management, managing whip turns/unhappy, etc). In 5 and 6, pacing is just off (and, End Turn is a slow as fuck process now)

i honestly dont even bother with any victory other than culture or science.

conquest requires way too much micromanagement and theres way too much riots/unhappiness at the end to make it worthwhile. its easier just to turtle up, hit end turn a bunch of times and beeline for the space win.

im mostly talking about civ 5, but i felt mostly same way about civ 6 too

What's the word on this game? I bought just about every other Civ on release but held off on this one due to negative reviews. I need a strat game now though. Should I pull the trigger on this or just wait for VII?

I played the hell out of Civ5 and I like Civ6 a lot more. Not as polished, surely. But what sequel could be when they've tacked on so many DLCs to Civ5? The graphics are better and the game focuses more on playing wide than tall (which I prefer). I am sure this will sound strange, but when I play this game I feel like I am messing around with wargaming minis on some terrain board in a garage somewhere. It's just satisfying to see my tiles get improved with districts and see my little infantry guys beat the shit out of the enemy.

Do not wait for Civ7. Civ games are best when they have the DLC that fleshes them out, makes them a full game that is not missing everything that made the earlier games amazing. The issue with Civ6 is that they have been nickeling people to death with small DLCs that do almost nothing. They have, supposedly, started to go back to the old method but they already lost me on this iteration.
