Collector's editions are just the corporate machine preying on their consumers. They are the head-on-collision of a number of things:
  • Expendable income
  • Abundant (possibly unrealistic) enthusiasm and expectations for the product, where you actually convince yourself that the actual experience itself is heightened if you partake in all the ancillary bullshit
  • Lack of social development, or being a hoarder/collector, where you just simply have to have everything in relation to a product you like
I guess you have to account for the wildcard of being an investor. They pick and choose certain products with the plan for resale, but most of these would be investors usually fall into a category above, but then have buyer's remorse.

I really like the various statues that seem so common in CE's nowadays. I think it would be awesome to have a shelf/room in my house with them all on display.

That is, if I actually had any. I'm too poor to buy CE's. But hey, if you've got money to burn, why not?

Oh right, I bought ni no kuni wizard edition because it was a legitimately nice ass CE.
The book itself was worth it, and the soundtrack

I wouldnt buy xillia, as i think statues are retarded though haha

I've only bought Blizzard CEs. Normally I ignore them as they flat out aren't worth it. I love art books though so...

Last CE I bought was Baldur's Gate II. I don't get the appeal for them either, unless they're the same price and the CE stuff is considered a pre-order bonus (i.e. Dark Souls). Digital CE's are particularly hilarious and/or pathetic.

I get the collector's edition of stuff because stupid people will pay big money for some stuff.

Example. Last year, some jack ass at a Gamestop here that has this stupid ass anime hair and talks 100mph a second.. dude's a real asshole and looks like a fag.
Anyway, I digress... He was talking about how he collects figurines and toys that come with games and there were some he didn't have. One of which was the Big Daddy when Bioshock was released. I happened to have one... so I told him I have one just sitting in my closet at home and he offered me $400 for it. So, I bought my game, ran home, went back and sure enough he handed me $400 for that stupid thing. Ever since then, I collect the collectors edition and sell them to people that have more money than sense.
Some Gamestop asshole paid you $400 for a game figurinethat you can buy for $20 off eBay? I call bullshit.

Correct. Never understood the fascination with digital CEs and downloadable content being bundled in. If I get a physical copy? Yeah, that's something to collect. Having a ticker on a website claiming I have something collected? Infinitely less interesting.

Only thing that makes a collectors edition worthwhile is an art book. The statues and all that crap usually just gather dust on the shelf anyway, but I'm a fan of video game art so I don't mind taking those down to look at every now and then.
This. Also as someone said above I like the OSTs most times. I own all the Blizzard CE's (All of which come with art books, soundtracks, mouse pads (lol), as well as perks in game) and the Dragon Age/Mass Effect CEs. Beloved IPs also get the CE treatment.

The only one I waffled on (and then ended up not getting) was the Skyrim CE. Later on I saw the Alduin statue one of my friends had and there was a very "god dammit" moment. I collect comic books, video gaming figurines but I drew that line at an Alduin statue. Yea, I don't get me either.

Considering how many versions of the Normandy I am sitting on, Alduin would have been a fine addition.

Edit: Wanted to say the BF sits on statues and other perks from games that he's never played. He scored some MGS headphones (Which is one of my favorite series) and the bioshock statue from the original CE and hasn't played either game. I'm slowly working on a work to incorporate them into my collection. What a dick.

I buy CEs for game franchises I really enjoy and want to support more so they'll keep making them. Anything extra they include is just a perk really. But yea, I wouldn't pay $140 for one, that's kind of extreme. Nor would I display any video game statuettes around my house, that shit is just tacky.

I like posters and art books, so if the CE includes those, I'll probably end up buying it; otherwise, I have no desire to collect statues, soundtracks which I can pull from game files easily enough or find online, or any of the other nonsense that gets packaged with some CEs.

I buy Limited Editions sometimes because they're basically the main game plus soundtrack and include the future DLCs for free.

Only Collector's Editions I've really gotten in the past were World of Warcraft ones with the art book, except for a couple other console games. The Alan Wake CE was pretty cool (the case looks like a novel), and I got it for pretty cheap.

The only CE I've gotten of the few that I regret was Dead Space 2. They offered a replica Plasma Cutter and it was just a tiny die-cast piece of shit plastic toy. A 99 cent Matchbox car knock-off from a 7-Eleven is better quality.

I buy the CE's for games that I enjoy that have both a statue/figurine or the like and at least one other item that I enjoy from CE's. The other items I like and will go for include all future dlc(specifically when its a game that will have a bunch from a company where I know the dlc is worth it), a zone or map only included with the CE or other exclusives that I will use(example Dark Messiah of Might and Magic you got 4 unique weapons in game from the CE, Neverwinter Nights 2 came with unique feat), real world items I will use(example Pool of Radiance Ruins of Myth Drannor came with a tabletop version, D&D dice with bag, F.E.A.R. came with a Dark Horse comic and Machinima movies), artbooks, signed and limited edition prints, lithographs, art or anything that is a limited run.

My game room has a 2 computers each with 3 monitors set up. I have a really nice gaming laptop, Ps3, Xbox 360, Wiiu, 2 huge 3-D televisions(including the so so awesome Panasonic TC-P55-VT50 all with touch screen remotes, several arcade games including a pc arcade cabinet with a huge catalog of arcade games and all old consoles and games on it, 4 pinball tables, ping pong table, poker table, pool table, bowling arcade game and air hockey. The reason I say all this is because this is where I put all my CE stuff. I put the statues on light pads or shelves if I like them enough. I put the art in cases on the wall if I like it enough. I put everything out in the game room that has to do with games basically. The last thing anyone cares about when they go in that room is how much of a nerd I am because I have video game paraphernalia everywhere in a room dedicated to fun gaming. They already realized how much of a dork/nerd/geek whatever you want to call it I am when they saw the room.

I don't see the issue with putting things out in your house/apartment if you like them. Gaming is one of my major hobbies and passions. I am going to represent that somehow in my house.
