So a weird fucking thing happened. Over the last few days I noticed my taskbar right click would not work. Could not type in the task bar search and windows just acting all fucked with context menus just flashing but I could not even click on them. So for hours I was scouring the fucking net for fixes trying all sorts of shit. Rolling back, resetting services and servers inside of windows. Fuck I was like a minute away from just wiping the shit with a clean install.

But then I noticed I had a fucking old Xbox360 wired controller plugged in from playing some old SNES emulator games. And low and behold, I unplugged it and things went back to normal.

No this is a real fucking thing and it happens to me sometimes after playing games. Old controller, new controller same thing (both "official" xbox controllers. Randomly "sticks" holding down a direction and the only fix is to restart. There's some fuckery afoot for sure. Switched from plugged in to Bluetooth so will see if its just when connected directly.

Been playing New World a lot the past few days, and while I think my system is doing ok something odd has been happening and I'm not sure what it causing it. This happens regardless of whatever graphic settings I use High/Med/Low or a mix. The games FPS meter will show 60fps (I have it capped due to my monitor being 60hz), but the game feels and looks sluggish, just doesn't feel as crisp as it normally does when the fps is showing 60 (out in the wild, in towns with lots of people its drags).

What could be causing the difference between the fps counters 60fps, but the perception of it being much less? Could it be at those times the cpu is hitting 100%, but the gpu is staying at around 80-85% usage?

So FPS isn't always the greatest indicator of how smooth a game is running. If the frame times (time it takes to draw the frame) isn't consistent the game can feel choppy even if you have 200 fps

So would this image, from New Worlds fps counter, be showing the FPS + Frame timing?

NWTiming.jpg

That was taken while in town. The FPS can go down to 34-ish, and the other number can go up to 45-ish. Outside of towns, the fps stays in the 58-72 range, with the other number staying at 13-18.

I would guess that top right number is frame time. I'd bet when you feel like the game isn't as smooth that number is fluctuating and spiking

Yea, in towns the game feels unplayable and that number is high. When I run the game in its uncapped mode, that number will go as low as 13, but when I cap it at 60, the number stays at 16. What part of my system effects frame timing?

So assuming frames are always drawn as they should, it's just 1000 divided by fps to figure out what your frame time should be. When you start getting frames that take longer to draw even if your fps is high it feels bad. So what you're seeing is when you set an fps cap you don't run into a lack of cpu, so your frames aren't hitting points where they don't have enough power to draw them in the time they should and you get awkward shit. The idea behind an fps cap is basically setting to a point where your system can always hit that to prevent the hitching from bad frame times.

At least this is my understanding on how all this works.

So a stronger cpu could smooth things out a bit at least? I'll be getting a new system in a month or so with an i5-11600k, currently using an i5-3750k. I'll be cap'd at 60 for awhile longer anyway since I won't be getting a new monitor for a few months. I did read that the monitor I'm using now is capable of overclocking (safely) to 72hz, which I did earlier today. Game ran normally and capped out at 72fps (but still had the frame timing issue), but it also looked a bit fuzzy compared to running it at 60hz.

i5-3570k? is this a prototype microwave cpu? Sir just what have you had your PCs suffering through?

Yeah bottleneck is you problem bro. I had that exact proc in my old PC and when BF5 came out it forced me to update. I was getting like 40-50 fps but like 1 sec stutters. Game would literally pause for a second every 30 sec or so. Game literally unplayable. This was with a 1070. I updated to a i5 9600K along with a mo-bo and new ram ($600) and BF5 after this change was a steady 60-70 FPS and no more stutters. Its like it unlocked the full potential of my 1070.

If youre going to upgrade anyway, I suggest you start building out your new rig right now, CPU, MOBO, PS, RAM...etc... Then just use your old video card until you can score one of the new ones. Ill guarantee you will increase your FPS and smooth out any shit youre experiencing with that ancient CPU you have right now.

Already done, should get the new system by the end of August or so. Probably paid a bit too much for what I'm getting, but the system will have a lifetime warranty, so its good to me. Then I'll just need a new monitor to finally get beyond the 60fps cap, lol.

Interesting that there is already another issue about New World before I even asked anyone to delve into mine. My g/f's computer is experiencing a "nvlddmkn" error 13 and 14, randomly during New World. The screen will go completely black, or just outright freeze and she has to end process it to close it out. There are a few band-aids she can change to extend the time it takes to get the error to reproduce, but if she cranks up the resolution, uses full screen and puts everything on highest - it crashes within 5-10 minutes. She doesnt experience this error in any other game, so Im unsure what the issue is here. If anyone here has experience with this issue, feel free to ask me for what information you need for me to help you diagnose the culprit.

thats usually an overheat/low power issue.

tldr you overheat/low power so much cpu loses connect to video card and goes "huh are you there? hello?" and then bam like a dropped call.

simple stuff first, air can the videocard/computer
make sure the computer doesn't goto low/powersave always high performance
update drivers

it's not overheat so much you crash to bsod, it's just like a bad connection from overheat/low power.

What brand of video card? If it happens to be EVGA, go download their Precision X1 program. You can run it while playing NW and set it up to control the fans on the card such that the card will remain cool enough. Its what I do with my 1060 while playing BDO / FFXIV / NW, the fans kick in and it all seems fine. I've only had 1 crash while playing NW.

It is evga and with all the problems they’re talking about, I’m concerned. But there is also a second power chord that I can plug into the video card that I’ll try. A lot of people said the second one wasn’t necessary since I had to order it separately- but it’s worth a shot I suppose. I’ve got the latest precision software on her comp so I’ll try that too. If all that fails, then it’s probably the psu I guess.

I’m “okay” with builds, but a noob when it comes to trouble shooting.
