I used to have this issue, but I have no idea if it just went away or I did something back then.

In any case, I just installed Win8.1 in a fresh install and reconnected my Korean monitor. I now have this weird issue with my mouse pointer jumping every once in a while. Sometimes it to the edge of the screen, sometimes its a random direction and random distance. It's incredibly frustrating while playing LOL and all of the sudden my screen starts moving or I miss a CS.

Anyone have a clue?

Edit:
This might be a solution:g600 mouse cursor jumping in LoL - League of Legends Community

Might be on board mouse memory profile vs. pc profile.

Might be driver thing thanks, used amd before and now nvidia. PSU shouldn't be a issue its a 750w and its only 1 760.
Well wasn't driver. Removed all traces of AMD but still just got a random restart about 40 minutes ago.

Shouldn't be PSU, its 750w for a 760. Used one 6 pin pci-e + one 6+2 pin pci-e to connect.

Going to try updating bios, dont think I have done that yet since I built this machine in 2010 and its been using same parts(except new ram) since then.

Hopefully that fixed it and some of the odd BSODs i've had on occasion. I guess I was using a very old bios, since there were 6 updates since the one I had.

And seems to have fixed it. No issues yet.

I just built a computer for a family member. Got Windows 7 loaded, all the drivers, etc. Working great EXCEPT the front USB ports are slow as shit. I'm talking like ~512KB/sec slow. Any clue what could cause this? I can't find any BIOS settings that could possibly limit it. Rear ports are full speed. Maybe the wiring is faulty? But I would think they simply wouldn't work if that's the case.

You might try plugging the wire from the front USB ports into a different USB connector on your motherboard. Most new-ish motherboards are going to have 2,3,4+ places that you can plug in USB ports. Also pay attention to if the ports are USB 2.0 vs 3.0 on the motherboard, and what the ports on the front of the case support(my case for instance has 4 USB 2.0 ports on the front, and 2 USB 3.0, plug them in to the wrong places on the motherboard internally and you're going to get all sorts of inconsistent performance).

Also, depending on your motherboard it could have varying amounts of USB controllers, if you have multiple USB devices you want to try to spread out the devices across as many separate controllers as possible. The more devices on 1 controller, the slower it's going to be.

And then just generally speaking, the ports on the back almost always perform a little better as they are connected/soldered straight to the motherboard, rather than being connected via a long wire like the front ports. That wire does cause latency, but it shouldnt be nearly as drastic as what you are experiencing.

Or a shitty cable going from your motherboard to the front panel. If got an usb bracket with the motherboard, do a quick test with that (plugged in the same port).

Ok my brother is having some issues with his laptop. At first his screen shit out but he could still use the computer when hooked into a TV via HDMI. Now that doesn't work either. Is this something that's reasonably fixable? Laptop is about a year old I think but it's not under warranty for this I think he checked with the manufacturer already.

Could be drivers but not sure how you would even go about that with no working display. My guess is the video card (or connection). On a laptop he'd probably end up replacing the motherboard depending on the card and if it's integrated or not. That could possibly be not even worth fixing. This is just a guess based on not looking at it.

What brand of laptop is it? Is it an HP? Many models of HPs made from like 2008-2012 or so have severe heat issues with the GPU. They built them to where the GPU and CPU both share a heatsink, so the GPU never gets a chance to cool off(with the CPU always keeping the heatsink hot) and over the span of a couple years the solder connections completely melt/pull apart and your display craps out with no GPU.

Happened to my wifes HP pavillion that she bought in 09 or so, and after researching online found TONS of people reporting the same issues after a couple years.

Same problem with my HP Envy laptop. The fan crapped out and it wouldn't start anymore because it's give a message that for safety it won't continue to boot.

Was just out of warranty of course, and so I spent the money on a new fan part. Took the laptop completely apart, and back together and the display won't work but will port out to multiple monitors. It's been converted to basically a stationary tower ever since.

It is for sure a video card problem, and if still in warranty get it into repair as quickly as possible before warranty runs out!!

whoever made the design decision to let the CPU and GPU both share a cheap, thin copper heatsink should be flogged in the streets. Such a bad idea.

So.... my PC recently has started locking up overnight with consistency, 90% of the time in standby 10% or so during actual use - and from what I can see it's not the CPU overheating, the fan is getting a little weak at times, but my heat monitor has it pegged at peaking at 115F at one crash and sub that for the others.

Also for whatever reason - they appear to be wired correctly but with the move we're prepping for I don't have to space to really set up my bench to tear it down - my optical drives aren't showing up in windows.

I'm thinking my PSU might be crapping out, although that would be incredibly weird to me since it's a 1000W Silver rated PSU that's got like 18 months into it with about 600W of estimated draw for the whole system (7970 with a slight overclock, FX-4850 [I think - its a 4 core FX the number is off my head]) Anyone got an easy checklist of things to do for this? Remember my space for cracking open the tower are limited right now since I've got half the house packed for the move in 2 weeks. (This will be a trivial fix after since tearing down everything and going one part at a time will be an option, but rather not be using the wife's PC for the next month between packing and unpacking)

While 115F isn't that hot, thats only like 46C, if that is a temperature while your computer is idling, then you could be having temp issues. Most modern processors with appropriate cooling will idle in the 25-35C range. A full load should push your processor into the 50s, maybe even approach 60, but 46C while idling is definitely a little off.

And while 46c shouldn't make your system crash no matter what its doing, if that truly is an idle temp it could point to other heat problems when the processor is under load(which it could be at night while running updates, or virus scans or whatever utilities you have run at night while you aren't using your PC)

Flipped some stuff earlier with the machine when it comes to "sleep mode" stuff to basically completely axe sleep mode besides turning off the monitor signal - and no lockups yet.

Got a feeling something is haywire with it going into and out of sleep mode. I really need to do a reformat on both machines (wife virused hers stupidly - fixed the virus but wonky after effects... and mine with this oddity...) got a feeling the bell is tolling on pushing it off anymore once I get the optical drive issue worked out. (Or say screw it and buy an external or find/buy a thumb drive to install from - since both our machines are USB boot friendly)

Sleep/Standby has always been a problem for certain PCs. YOu would think it's not rocket science, but apparently it is

It wasn't an issue before - and its still locking up rarely, but almost zero now.

Going on like 3 days with one lockup versus 1-8 hrs being the best to expect before sometimes even less than 1 hr.

Yeah, it's one thing Apple seem to have always gotten right. Even with my recent build PC sleep mode in Windows or "suspend" in Linux is a coin toss if it'll wake.

8.1 didn't but about 5 days later now and after getting the first freeze post 8.1 I tried something that seems to have - seems like my Bluetooth Dongle was freezing the machine somehow. Wasn't using it for anything currently anyhow so no real loss to disconnecting it and now its running gorgeously I think 4 days without a freeze.
