And more testing and determined the USBs are just completely fucking up everything on the machine - except for hooking up the Keyboard and Mouse anything else on the USBs either freezes the machine or doesn't work at all. Think there's a short in the motherboard... this is going to be an annoying project mid-move...

Pull out all the front panel headers. I had a flaky front panel USB PSB that was causing shits on the rears, too (since they were using the same USB controller). Pull out ALL the front panel shit (USB and audio).

If that doesn't fix the locks right away, then start pulling cards out of the mainboard.

Take a look at the caps on the mainboard while you are at it.

By "front panel headers" you mean the ones that passthrough to the front of the case? Those are the ones that are reliably freezing the machine so do seem the most problematic - will try disconnecting them later to see if things improve.

Anyone have any idea how I would set my 2 Xbox 360 controllers to a single input? They are wireless and I have the dongle.

No dice on getting the rear USBs to work after disconnecting the front - and only card I've got in the machine is video so not bothering disconnecting it. Mainboard issue it is then... good excuse to replace the case while I'm at it.

Video started locking up and displays jagged lines and the colors go to shit.

Even happened during POST (is that still what it's called??)

I figure my 5+ year old GeForce 8800 GT is on the way out possibly?

Does your processor have integrated video that you can switch over to that to make sure it's the video card before you go to the trouble of buying a new one?

Got the GTX 650 today and she works just fine again.

I think I'm as far as I can go for upgrades on this machine. I'm still running with a Intel Core2 Quad Q6600. Are there any decent upgrades available for that LGA775 socket?

No. I just recently replaced my Q9550, and in all honesty I have't noticed much of a difference in gaming, although most of my gaming is 3-4 year old games. Given the GPU you're running, I don't know that there's much point in upgrading your CPU/mobo/RAM. You'd probably get way more bang for the buck upgrading your GPU.

Are games even really optimized for multi-core yet? I know they utilize some multi-threading, but I always thought they still relied a lot more on clock speed still.

Nope not really. Even CPU clock speed doesn't make a massive difference. The difference in most games between my i5 3570k running at 3.4ghz or 4.6ghz is like 1-2 FPS. Your GPU is still going to determine 90% of your gaming performance.

There's a huge difference between single and dual core performance wise. But not much between dual and quad. Depends on the game as well.

Makes sense. A single-core processor is still going to need to be running tons of shit in the background of whatever game you are playing. Once you get to at least dual-core one core can be dedicated 100% to the game, with your OS and other crap running off the other.

Right, for instance EQ2 will run better on a higher frequency single core than a multi-core of slower speed as it was never optimized for multiple cores.

Having a weird issue. Computer just randomly won't boot up, it gets to the Windows loading screen (win7) and just freezes, no animation displayed. Try repairing, repair does a restore, it boots up. Reboot again, same freezing shit. So fuck it, reinstall. The computer was bloated as hell anyway with all the garbage my wife downloaded. Fresh install, get everything up... it does it again. Run memtest86, everything checks out. Ran some hd testing utility, can'[t remember the name, all checks out. Checked the drives for errors, all check out fine. Finally get it to stop by disconnecting the Iomega external usb drive on reboot. So with the external drive connected it freezes every time, disconnected it is fine. The internets say to go into the BIOS and disable legacy USB support, but I don't have that in mine. The internets also say try reloading the drivers, but I'm using the standard win7 usb drivers, nothing fancy. Not sure how to fix it at this point and disconnecting the drive is inconvenient.

This happened out of nowhere, btw. No recent changes, the usb hd has been connected for months now.
