I loved my Chromecast when it first released, but I never use it at all anymore. Amazon Firestick all the way(doubly so if you are an Amazon Prime subscriber)

I just cut the cord today because fuck verizon, and they gave me a great deal on 75/75 internet only.

Gonna have to pick up a chromcast or two. Anyone have any alternatives?
Go with a full fledged device.

Apple TV (new one)
Amazon TV (the box not the stick)
Roku 3 or higher (box not stick)

I'm curious why you would recommend a box device? I haven't turned my Roku on in a year or more since I got my Chromecast/Fire Sticks

I don't do streaming apps, I have a plex server with high quality files locally on my NAS. All of this devices let you install a ton of different apps. I am currently loving my AppleTV the most. The wife has exercise apps for the morning, I have all the streaming apps, weather app, some silly games, the plex app, etc

I have used the sticks and they aren't terrible but they are definitely low qual no matter what. They seem to have the most amount of needing to unplug them and back in and I hate that. You don't really save a ton of money by using the sticks.

Interesting. The Amazon Fire stick has an entire app store as well. I have my Plex app that I stream 1080p video with no issues from my media PC, it even has games, etc.

Apple TV may be a completely different beast, as I have never owned an Apple product so I have no familiarity with it at all, but I can't see any point to a Roku 3 or Amazon Fire TV over a fire stick. I guess maybe if you can't get a decent WiFi signal at your TV and you need to go wired with ethernet cable, that's about the only thing I can think of.

I might have to rethink it but my mom's Roku stick is garbage and I have a friend with a fire stick that hates it.

Wish that list had the game consoles on it. We're using the Xbox One for all of our apps (and for an OTA tuner w/ DVR buffer - full DVR functionality coming later) but recent reductions in available non-gaming overhead are painfully obvious as the Kinect struggles and apps have occasional issues.

It should get many of the apps in the Windows Store at some point in the near future, and we'll probably wait for the full DVR functionality before we decide to move to something else for our primary device.

We cut the cord but are cheating, since I pay for Mom's DirecTV we can log in to all of the different apps including HBOGo.

Not sure how we're going to handle football season yet.

Football season is super super easy if you are the slightest bit tech savvy and willing to pay $99 for the entire season including pre and post. You can also do free streams but that low amount is worth it if you are a big fan.

When it comes closer I will keep my eye out and if they haven't made any changes to what they offer I will post a tutorial.

I've not streamed televisions or anything like that (like ABC, CBS, PBS, etc), but, this has me intrigued. If I "cut the cord" and buy a Roku, Apple TV, or whatever...able I able to watch shit live, or do I need to wait a day or two (or even weeks) for it to come up online?

Depends on the channels you like. Sling TV gives you a lot of channels. I thought the service was OK, but I needed multiple subscriptions in my household. It was actually just as much as cable at that point.

Also if you must have local news...then an HD antenna? It's definately doable, just not neat.

Live news and live sports have been the big hangups for cord cutting for a while now. Sling TV helps in that it has Espn channels and CNN bus that's pretty much it. You need an HD antenna to get local channels for local news and local sports (NFL) and you still won't have access to a lot of stuff like Fox news, MSNBC, Fox sports, probably your local MLB/NBA or NHL team (sports that have regional TV contacts rather than national)

yea
antennaweb.org , see how big of an antenna you need, it's still cheap, i got this
Amazon.com: 1byone Amplified HDTV Antenna - 50 Mile Range with Detachable Amplifier Power Supply for the Highest Performance and 10ft Coax Cable: Electronics
50mile antenna that is still indoors, the longest they have is 60m for indoors, past that you gotta hang it outside and high (for obvious reasons), there are some indoor too, but the price really skyrockets. 50mile and more you'll need the antenna amplified, so you just gotta hook up a splitter to usb or the outlet (all included), you get these basic channels, ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, CW, PBS, Univision.

Of those Univision is the most important one

I love the fire stick. I replaced my chromecast with that a while back, and now the chromecast is on my bedroom tv which really never gets used.

I have Netflix, Prime, Hulu, and of course my Plex server. That's way more than I need. Really the Hulu is probably a waste and I almost never watch anything on Prime but whatever.

I've tried just about all the streaming sticks and boxes. I got rid of all the sticks. I think they are slow. The boxes have beefier hardware and you can zip around the UI and start streams faster. Laggy UI drives me nuts. This has been my experience with the sticks.

I love being able to go to my friends house and saying hey watch this and bam instantly their tv changes to what ever I'm streaming to their Chromecast.
