I'm considering finally getting a seedbox, but I'm barely literate when it comes to linux.

What I'd like to be able to do is have a list of shows that automatically download from IPT, and are ideally distributed to either myself, my parents, or my brother depending on the show. Is this possible with dropbox? Can I also have said shows delete themselves off the dropbox once they've been sent on their merry way to whichever computer?

For what it's worth, I'd likely be using Whatbox. I like their pricing.

Yeah their service looks over priced like the rest of their shit.
Probably so. I have Sling and at 20$ a month that is just about right. ESPN, Disney for they kids, CNN and I'm good to go. I still have Hulu at $10/mo but I'm getting close to cutting that off to since I almost never watch cable and most days me and the kids are at the Y anyway. Amazon Prime + Netflix + Sling are way more then I need.

It sure looks like in 5 years we'll all be getting all of our TV over the internet and most likely paying the same as we pay for cable now but only getting half the channels.

I don't doubt that it is heading that way but traditional cable won't die for a while, you know old people and all. 50% of Americans still have a land line. I hope sling, apple tv and android tv all take off, I like choices.

Here is a post you need to read, regarding syncing your whatbox.ca seedbox with dropbox

My issue with streaming services is you get a small savings when it's all added up but give up DVR functions and are stuck watching commercials. Not worth it.

I would be hesitant using a seed box tied to my actual drop box account. I'll take my chances with a foreign owned and located server in the Netherlands vs a legit company in the US that will roll over the second someone realizes it's being used for such purposes. Certainly convenient but no thanks. Just make sure you make a fake account and use a VPN.

Yea, while it's more expensive, it's why Playstation Vue now officially has my attention - since they've confirmed with the launch today that is has a cloud-based DVR including live pausing - assuming the room and quality is up to snuff, that's an adequate replacement.

Streaming services but without DVRing is a waste of time.

Much like most overly sized service companies mired in the past, instead of developing technologies to maintain dominance in the new landscape cable companies are going to double down on retardation and go down with the ship. Good riddance.

Maybe you are right but I'm not so sure how it is going to work out like that. Cable companies get to charge us these crazy prices right now because they are the oligopoly. Already prices are lower because of online services like Netflix and Hulu which offer packages of content at reduced prices. Also note that cable company fee structures often includes lots hidden fees and additional charges where your bill keeps going up month after month. Then look at home much content is going free online. You can already find a number of shows online for free. Then there was the HBO announcement which is going to spur even more networks going it their own way.

Vue definitely seems like a step in the right direction - pricy, but still roughly half of equivalent cable once promos come off.

Vue is nice but when they add espn and the rest of the Disney umbrella the price is going to skyrocket. My guess is the thing holding up the contract is they want it in a separate tier which Disney objects to.

ESPN charges the cable companies like $15 per viewer or something crazy like that. It's by far the most expensive channel.

I like ESPN during football season but I seriously wouldn't miss anything but MNF. I'd get over that.

Aside from college football and mnf I couldn't care less about ESPN. Very over rated. I could do without it for a good part of the year and I'd guess many others could do the same.

ESPN has to be one of the first to embrace online streaming because it is arguably at the biggest risked of being replaced by online streaming. It is already hilariously easy to find streamed sports games of better and better quality nevermind countless highlight videos of the best parts of any game on youtube or everywhere else.

Being someone that cares less about sports I'd be very happy for it to go completely a la carte - knowing it's supposedly $15/mo I'm paying for something I could give a shit about is more than a little bit irritating. (I thought it was like $1-2/mo previous to the recent posts - $15/mo is ludicrous for those of us that don't give a damn about sports)

ESPN is WAY more expensive than any other channel..but not $15 expensive

OG-AC140_TopTV__G_20140729144610.jpg

Maybe $8-$9 tops for every single ESPN channel if you add up ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPNNews. And I don't know WTF 3net is.

I would imagine AMC has to be rocketing up the list as well with the success of its shows

Here's another list thats a tad older, it's from late 2013
