Mad Men isn't for everyone. I think it is easily on par with The Sopranos and The Wire, but some people just can't get into it.
I was highly recommended to watch Mad Men. Watched the first season and it really just didn't do it for me and I never even gave season 2 a chance.
I tend to have a open mind to most shows, but I just felt like it wasn't going to go anywhere that would have me interested. I know judging a show off of one season is a bad idea. Does it pick up any after S1?

Yes! I didnt really get into Mad Men until the third or fourth episode of the second season. After that, I was hooked. Its a really good show. For me, some of the best parts is the unexpected humor right in the middle of serious drama.

A little over 20 years and I don't think it was critically acclaimed, but a damned good show none the less:

I think thats a 30+ yr old show, I have watched every episode and loved it. Though I havent seen it in about 30 years and probably never will rewatch because im afraid it will ruin my nostalgia. Same deal with V

Sopranos just started up again on HBO... one of the 10 HBO channels that is... last Thursday if you still haven't seen it and are interested.

I finally thought of something that hasn't been mentioned but was truly excellent and ranks up there with any of the best of all time but not of the last 20 years; I think everything that meets that criteria has already been mentioned anyway. The 1976 BBC adaptation of I, Claudius. It is a wonderful drama that follows the life and rise of Emperor Claudius (the cripple) and details the lives of those of his family that came before him, their relationship with him and their deaths. There is zero action, it is all intrigue and dialogue but it is truly wonderful if you enjoy a good character based story and a bit of Roman history.

If you liked House of Cards you will probably adore I, Claudius.

Oh and another British series but from the last 20 years would be Little Dorrit if you happen to like Charles Dickens and are not overly irritated by the customs and mannerisms of Victorian England. It deals with debtor's prisons and a young girl who grew up in one yet manages to be kind, caring and desirable despite it all and the struggles she faces while caring for her jerk of a father. Yes its a bit saccharine from time to time but overall it is quite enjoyable if you are into character driven stories.

Planning on getting back into The Wire after I catch up on Boardwalk Empire. +1 for season 1 of Lost. Watching anything past that is your choice if you dare, but season 1 was fantastic, and probably the one and only season in any show where it worked to drag audiences along for the mystery, because the cast was just PERFECT. Any show that tries to drag you into that "The questions lead to more questions!" format now will ALWAYS suck (FastForward), but Lost made it somewhat enjoyable. Looking forward to The Wire though with how good everyone says it is. I've liked it thus far but I sort of trailed off toward the end of season one. Likewise though, for those who haven't gotten into Sopranos though, DO IT.

Just downloaded the first season of Spartacus the other day. That and the first 3 seasons of Dexter are on my list now that we're hitting the lull time for scripted TV again.

First four seasons of West Wing are better than those two, imo. If you watch Spartacus though, muscle through the first and second episode, they are pretty bad (First episode is actually horrible.) After that it gets better. Gods of the Arena, the "prequal" was, in my opinion, the best season.

Yeah planning to do the full run of Spartacus and bail on Dexter after the Trinity Killer arc.

I'm iffy on Sorkin, sometimes I just end up groaning at his shit way too much to enjoy it.

I felt the same way about Breaking Bad Season 1

I, Claudius was awesome. Rome is like the cheap american knock off version of that series. The only problem I had with I, Claudius, the only one, was everyone was English. And sort of obviously English. At a certain point that just got WEIRD.

I wouldn't say it was a detriment at all, it's just this weird little thing that crept into my brain about 3/4 of the way through the series. "Hey, dye livia's hair red and she could be Mary Queen of Scots." But then I quickly got the fuck over it and finished watching.

Has everyone seen Battlestar Galactica or is it not considered "critically acclaimed"?

Because it was an awesome show, definitely better than some of the others in these lists.

The biggest one for me would be Band of Brothers.

I tried a few times but the actors might as well be chinese. They all look the same thanks to the war setting and uniforms and shit and 30 mins in I'm already annoyed because I have no clue who is who.

Never seen Seinfeld, not even a single episode.

Yet forced by the wife to watch with her every single episode of Sex and the City, Gossip Girl and Friends.
