I think as of now, the biggest question going forward is how will this game keep players still playing after a couple of campaign resets. Especially if some of those players are always finding themselves on the wrong (losing) side.
I think the fact that there are campaign resets will actually allow this game to retain more players for longer. I was chatting with a bunch of different guys this weekend at PAX over dinner. Our group consisted of hardcore gamers to casual MMO players and everyone was excited about the campaign reset mechanisms. The most interesting time of an MMO is the launch of the game or an expansion. After 2-3 months of nothing changing, the game gets stale. As long as they make sure the campaigns are different enough (either because of rules sets or maps) then I think they will see better retention then many of the current MMO's.

Do you guys really think this isn't complete vapor?
I don't think it will be vaporware. The team behind it has already invested a solid amount of money and, unlike Curt, they are familiar with how to actually make and launch a game.

You guys are confusing yourselves because of the way Mist asked the question lol.

I do = you think the game ISN'T vaporware.

I don't = you think the game IS vaporware.

Been out for a few days here are some Kickstarter Updates since then:

GDC for business only, no game promo. No PAX. Full update schedule for this week. KS tier unlocks mount crafting recipe/style type.

We have a full update schedule next week for sure!

No we won't be at PAX, sorry!

No date for that yet, first testing this summer! Kickstarter delivery December 2016.

Any earlier question about what happens post-Kickstarter as it relates to pledge packages and stretch goals. First the pledge packages will change both in content and pricing once crowdfunding moves to our website (Kickstarter values will be better). Some rewards, such as the arcane weapons and all the strongholds are Kickstarter-specific rewards, and will no longer be available. Any partially complete stretch goal(s) will be transferred to our website and be funded to completion there by new backers. Hopefully this clears that up!

Actually Todd and Gordon were at GDC for business meetings, not really promoting the game as such. And more is coming next week!

@Raleigh Cooper - Fear not. While mounts themselves are not permanent (and can die) We WILL be giving you a method of "Crafting" A new mount with the same appearance. You can look like a rockstar over and over again!

Skill Training FAQ + Behind the scenes with the artists!
Posted by ArtCraft Entertainment, Inc.
It's Monday! Another week is here and we're off to a great start toward Stretch Goal #2 - Mounts and Caravans. Today we want to take you behind the scenes with the artists at ArtCraft Entertainment and explain the Skill Training system in Crowfall.

Passive Training / Skills FAQ
How does passive training work?
Passive training allows you to advance your character(s) skills, whether or not you are actively logged in and playing the game.
Narratively speaking, this is represented in the game by having a temple with Thrall priests "praying" for your Hero to remember the skills from his previous life.
Is there active training, too?
Yes, you can advance a skill through use -- but only to get proficiency. Passive training is the primary way of advancing your character's skills.
Can I only train one skill at a time?
Actually, no! You can train a character in three skills at any one time. They don't all advance at the same rate, however.

You select a primary, secondary and tertiary skill to advance. The primary will advance quickest, followed by the secondary, followed by the tertiary.
What scale is used for skills?
100% is the "theoretical maximum" of a human hero. As a point of reference: if your character has a 100% sword skill, then they could compete as an Olympic-level fencer.

Since our players are immortal champions, chosen by the Gods at the time of their death, they often have skills above the "theoretical maximum" that a human mortal can achieve. Anything above 100% is heroic level; bards wrote poems that centered around your skills and your achievements are the stuff of legends.
How quickly do skills advance?
These numbers are still being balanced, but we're generally going for something like this: to reach 100% level with any skill takes 1 month of primary training, 2 months with secondary, 3 months with tertiary.

The results are granted on a diminishing returns curve, meaning that it is much easier to gain the first 10% of any skill than it is to gain the last.

As an upshot of this system, every time you log in, you should see advances in three of your skills!
Can I train more than one character at once?
Yes, if you have an optional VIP membership. A VIP membership allows you to train three characters in parallel. Each character will also have three passive training slots (i.e. it works the same way with ALL THREE characters, as it does with the first one.)
Once I select a primary, secondary or tertiary skill to train, can I change it? Or is it locked?
It is not locked. You can change (and re-order) which three skills you want to train at any time.
Can I train beyond my skill max?
No. You can only train up to your skill max.
Can I increase my skill max?
Yes. Max skills are determined by a combination of your archetype, promotion class, advantage and disadvantage runes, and Disciplines.
How are the skill increases calculated over time?
The gains are done on a diminishing returns curve. While it may be quick to gain those low-end skill points, mastery of a skill (i.e. the upper portion of the range) will take a considerable amount of time. It may be more beneficial to work on a bunch of skills at the low end rather than taking a skill to the absolute max. How you choose to advance is up to you!
What if I hit a skill max, and I am not able to get online?
No problem! You can queue-up additional skills to train.

NOTE: As of posting this we are just 750 backers away from the 12k backer goal reward of the All-Father statue. So close! If you haven't yet - be sure to let your friends, family and enemies know that now's the time to back Crowfall. You'll want to see them on the battlefield.

Ah, so anyone seriously playing the game will be able to easily maximize their passive training for crafters. Or just have multiple combat characters like how most people had a minotaur in SB just for tearing down walls.

How useful alts will be depends on if you are only allowed to play one character in a particular campaign etc.

have they given any indication that this is true? If anything it seems like they'd want to force one account to participant in a campaign until they find out how quickly people quit when they're losing.

I haven't seen anything where they have said one way or another.

17. What is to prevent people from non-stop Campaign hopping?
Campaigns are not intended to be transitory. Our design goal is for players to pick a Campaign and stick with it until the end.
We have a number of ideas to enforce or encourage this, from hard rules (i.e. characters are locked to a Campaign) to soft rules (if you quit a Campaign early, you lose all rewards and pay a penalty.)
This is one that we're still debating, though - and we'd love to hear your thoughts! On the good side, it's also a decision that we can easily change, if we try something and we don't like it.

---

No finite details, like everything in this game, that's the closest we got. Getting kind of tired of the non-commital stuff makes conversations about this game incredibly hard to sustain.

Sure, but nothing in that even indicates they're considering limiting you to one character. Limiting you to one side for your account falls along those lines, but not one character to that side. They're trying to emulate the release->level->perform->win cycle of an MMO release. Making it so that players are naturally playing multiple campaigns because they have 3 characters passively training and can't put the on the same campaign is antithetical to that.

i.e. characters are locked to a Campaign ---

Who knows what they actually mean by that. I'm fine with them doing something like Planetside where a character swap had a 24hr cooldown on it.

Perhaps it's one character per campaign, but you can assign a character to another campaign incase one of them is not fun.

Maybe they implement a cooldown to swap which characters are associated with which campaign?

Who knows man. One account per campaign seems a bit stupid with regards to people that buy multiple boxes.

I don't see how you could interpret "characters are locked to a campaign" as anything but "once you move a character to a campaign they are unable to leave until the campaign is over.".

I'm not trying to interpret anything. This whole conversation is one giant IF my man.

You guys asked for some semblance of the notion and that was the closest I could get. It's an open ended topic until the crowbros close it.

How did SB handle character swapping? Was it a good thing that an entire guild could switch to minotaurs on the fly?

I'd say it was good. Players had more freedom to have a stable of characters for different purposes and could switch to them. Players could transcend the class limitations and outwork other players by not only bringing together a force of combat-oriented characters, but once the field was won they could bring a demolition squad. It'd be annoying if each player had to choose between being geared toward fighting or being geared toward crafting.

I'd honestly prefer if they followed the Eve path and made one character able to train every skill in the game and not just what fit into their 3 disciplines (or whatever they're calling them).

But I guess that would cut into Character slot profits.

I also never played SB so I don't know how successful their system was or wasn't.

I like the eve+ skill system they put forth. I just wish they showed some of the possible training skills. Wouldn't mind if they just copy pasted most of eve's with different names.
Oh, and the RP reasoning for how passive training works a little lols, but whatever.

Edit: I prefer the 3 characters training on a sub, because the alternative is eve having 3 accounts. And the varied max/min for the characters means there will be consequences on character creation instead of everyone being the same. Both get thumbs up from me.

I thought it was funny too. I'd be happy if their ingame reasoning for passive training was, "because fuck you that's why."
