I hate how this thread has zero value to me now, yet it is on top of the new posts list every time I refresh it.

Do you seriously need to be human? Just use Ring of Binding. I've only been human for like 30 minutes total out of 40 hours.
While I don't feel that I need to be Human 100% of the time, it is a drastic change from the previous games. In Demons Souls, you returned to Human after helping kill a boss. In Dark Souls you received an extra Humanity. So in that regard, most of us assumed that not returning to Human after helping kill a boss 100% of the time was the bug. We never really understood why you would sometimes return to Human after losing to a boss and we assumed that was a bug.

At any rate, the ring is useful but it's also situational. Personally I'd rather use another ring that provides a benefit all of the time as opposed to the ring of binding which takes up a slot when you're below a certain amount of health simply to offset that loss.

The biggest reason a lot of us don't like the idea of "fixing" it to where we will never return to human after helping with a boss is that it kills a major motivation for engaging in co-op play. The souls are nice (VERY nice) but 99% of the time I've helped others out has been for the chance to return to Human. Like I said, I let myself get close to that 50% penalty (give or take depending on where I'm at) and then help people out to restore my life and erase the deficit. While there has always been a massive amount of risk with Souls games, there has also been a major incentive to assist others in co-op play and removing the ability to return to Human as one of those rewards kills that incentive for a large number of players.

Killed Rat King... then progressed downwards. It just gets progressively more nope as you go along. Got down to the Black Gulch, promptly eaten, killed, poisoned. Just... I don't like that place one bit.

I also need more torches now.

Angel you complain about not having enough hp and then turn around and call a ring that gives you a 50% hp boost in hollow form situational. Wtf mate. Go jump off a cliff ten times, bottom your hp out, stop thinking that you need to be human and it's no longer situational. The only reason to ever be human is if you need to summon help.

So is the "Great Scythe" in this game in any form? I remember finding that and it completely trivializing the first game (but in a good way) with its reach and dmg scaling. I'm sitting on the balcony at a nice resort typing a message about Dark Souls while my girlfriend gets ready for dinner. I actually made the mistake of telling her I'd wished I'd brought my PS3 for cloudy days like today... hah.

Great Scythe is in this game. I'll spoil the location and you can choose for yourself if you want to know.

Great Scythe is a random drop from the spiders prior to the giant spider boss. I got two of them on my first run through there.

You seem pretty hostile towards me over a video game. I was going to invite you to my big birthday bash but now I'm reconsidering that.

BTW having 100% health and a useful ring in the 4th slot > than 75% health and only 3 effective rings... I wouldn't have thought that would be a difficult concept but who knew?

That's been my strategy too. Try to stay human as much as possible.

That said, this game.... this game... I go underground where it is dark, to encounter poisonville, leave there because... nope. Only to go find a blinding white forest that leads to curseville.

Death everywhere I go. Game takes a rather sharp upwards turn in what it throws at you.

20 million deaths now. 10 million yesterday. Game is going to break like the Y2K bug because they don't have enough numbers on the stone.

Sad thing is that's not even counting some people that play offline - nor PC or 360 players...

I thought the death count was shared between consoles?

If not, that is crazy.

Update on fun, fell in a pit with pools of acid, got stunned in one of them, broke all my gear, died, lost all souls, have to go back and grind easy mobs to afford the repairs.

Ouch...

As I mentioned, earlier I killed the Gargoyles. Then I backtracked a bit to clear the Huntsmen area. The Undead Executioner was really easy and I killed it on my second try. Pushed forward and killed the Skeleton Lords on my second try as well. Went a bit ahead and saw that the next area is full of poison! Said fuck it and I'll pick it back up tomorrow or Sunday. I only have 6 points in Adaptability which is going to hurt a lot I think...

Also I found that if you give a Soul Vessel to one of the old women at the beginning of the game, you can reallocate your spent points. Useful if you really screw up on allocating stats. However, other than the lack of Adaptability I mentioned above, I'm pretty happy with my stat allocations.

Funny, I didn't think I was being hostile at all. Yes I realize that needing to wear an hp ring is not the most efficient possible way to gear, but come on, we have 4 ring slots now instead of 2. Swap out 3 of them based on your situation, like many do with other gear anyway, and be happy. I just see a lot of people complaining about humanity all over the place and it's really a non-issue.

BTW assuming the guide is correct (and it's been flawless for the stuff I've used it for thusfar) - Cling Ring is > halving the max loss on hollowing - it puts the max at 80% according to the guide vs. 50%.

Okay, so today I only had about 2 hrs to play......managed to down Covetous Demon and whatever the Medusa chick is named. Not too shabby, and I'm pretty happy to be through the poison area for sure.

To anyone who's much futher than me......is it true that the game "truly begins.." post primal bonfires? If so, I can't wait for another Sens Fortress....../drool

Earthen Peak and Iron Keep are very similar to Sens for me. Actually Iron Keep
gives me then Anor Londo vibe because it has the god damn javelin archers.

Re: story question

The Old Ones are not the end of the story, just like Dark Souls, there's another branch of the storyline after that. I'm sure a very difficult branch.

Covetous:
Don't let it eat you. Have seen claims of people coming back out with no armor.
