Go hereand make note or print out parts of it. You're looking for the big red boxes (medium weapon yield) to big red circles (high yield). A good place to get kitted up is the Rify ship wreck or the North East Airfield, NE of Krasnostav. Hop servers until you find one that is less than 5/40. Reason for making a beeline to the medium and high yield weapon spots is for a fire axe. A hatchet supposedly does the same damage. Don't waste your time with any of the other melee weapons. The fire axe or hatchet will trivialize zombies.
-Shot a guy for a can opener. I then stupidly returned to his body to trade my .357 magnum for his .45FNX without knowing that the FNX has the rarest magazine in the game while the .357 ammo can be found both at military areas and homes. Got a bunch of .45ACP ammo, no fucking magazine...
-Lakes are potable for now, this may change in the future. So if you feel you're vulnerable near a water pump, hit a pond or lake. Water purification tablets don't work currently (unless they've been fixed?). Canteens and plastic water bottles can be refilled. You have to be in 1st person view, drag them down to the quick bar, hit their corresponding number to hold them in your hand. Stare at the lake and roll the mouse-wheel up and down until the option "fill water-bottle" shows up. If you're working near a lake or water pump, odds are you'll rarely be drinking from your canteens.
-Durability is only important for scopes and weapons (debatable). For everything else, durability doesn't mater currently. I.e. a badly damaged can of beans is perfectly fine. Supposedly there was some infection risk involved with badly damaged medical supplies but so far no one has proven that to be true.
-It seems that as long as you are well fed and hydrated, and don't have the "healthy" or what ever status, you will still regenerate health while logged off. I got beat to shit by a zombie since I spawned with nothing. Got greyed, ate and drank a ton but I never got the healthy status. I logged off and came back the following day and noticed color had slowly returned. The next time I logged back in my color was fully back. So it seems you'll regenerate even while logged off.
-Don't be afraid to lose everything, it's not that hard to get everything back. Get used to the idea that you
willlose everything anyhow. Often times you might desynch which is a common thing going on right now. Anything you do while you're desynched is lost and a server will roll you back. I lost a bunch of valuable equipment and got rolled back do to that bullshit. Some folks have died do to that bug and when they log back in they are a fresh spawn.
-Don't be afraid to recycle your character a few times until you're in a better position, better server, what ever. You lose nothing by dying as a fresh spawn. As a fresh spawn I make a beeline to known locations of gear without a care in the world. Once I have a fire axe, enough food, and a can opener, I then start getting a bit more tactical. Once I have a gun/rifle with ammunition, I get a lot more cautious.
-Your voice comms are muted when you start off, keep that in mind.
Frankie's Arma2 DayZ mod series is invaluable. Learned everything I know from watching the whole series (weapon drop, zombie patterns, loot locations, etc). Once you know where all the various loot drops the game is trivialized and it becomes a mater of how well you can manage the clunky interface and shitty "simulated" FPS mechanics.
Well she absolutely loves pvp in most games...so it wouldn't surprise me if she ended up wanting to be a "faggot" and run around trying to murder people for their stuff. We had a lot of fun playing APB until they let hackers run around unchecked and tanked the game. Now that it's an item mall she recently picked it back up again and is having fun with it.
[edit]A wife or partner really helps out. Sucks none of my friends want to play this.
Make sure she understands that it's a death-match game with bullet drop and windage. It is not smooth like APB or Planetside. Not sure how I can explain it, but if you've played the Rainbow Six series or Ghost Recon, you'll get the idea more or less. The closest I've seen is WWII Online. In other words, there is a procedure to bring your weapon sights up, accuracy is all over the place if you ran or moved, there are advantages to being crouched, prone, standing and so on. Shots will take you out in one or two hits. Unlike APB where you could run and gun and take a bunch of damage, you just cant do that here do to the very long ranges, horrible accuracy when moving, and so on. The pvp is really all about camping, slow and length observation, and proper positioning to outflank.
There is no crafting, the interface is very clunky, and it is not at all streamlined like Planetside or a true FPSer. They'll probably be fighting the camera more than actually enjoying the game. Particularly since the asshole won't turn off mouse acceleration no mater how many people have told him. Once you two are kitted up and have figured out where stuff is at as well as memorized the map, things will get boring pretty quick. The only "end game" if you want to call it that is going back to the various bases and player congregation points and taking out other players.
