Gotta give the dude credit, he milked his 15 minutes of fame for all it was worth(and probably more). I'd do it in a heartbeat if I could.
I definitely have a Soundblaster X-Fi Fatality kit somewhere in my closet still.

I should really turn some of my old hardware into working machines and sell them for a few bucks.

I've got a working i7 860 box somewhere, just needs a video card and power supply. And I've got a lot of junk older than that.

Yeah, that he did. I just can't believe that someone is still using his name. Does he even play anything any more?

The guy did play Quake 3 really well, though.

So, I just found my Windows 7 CD from my 4 year old laptop which has a serial # on the package. How can I go about re-using that copy on my new desktop build?

No, like, exactly what kind of key as in how the key was issued to the OEM, it gets weird, there's no way to know.

Oh ok, it's a Dell (Alienware) OEM laptop key so I think there may be some issues.

Either way, can I install off that disk and get the new PC to boot, just when it connects to the internet it may find issues?

Don't install it off that disk, it probably has a bunch of Dell bloat and drivers baked in.

Just download a generic image for win7 and try and activate it with that key.

Burn this ISO, install from there. Use your key, if it doesn't work call the number it gives you and ask Microsoft to validate it, say you had to replace a lot of the hardware on the computer.

As far as I know, OEM keys no longer exist with Vista and higher. A key is a key is a key. The only reason it wouldn't work would be that it's already been activated too many times, in which case, yes, call Microsoft to activate by phone. When it asks you how many computers are using this key, always reply "zero". Problem solved.
