I can't even imagine what you could possibly do with that card in a game in the next couple years that would come close to using 12GB of RAM. That's nuts. 4K generally doesn't even use 8GB in most games right now. I guess if you could find a 1080p game that actually needs 3GB at that resolution, 4K could need 12, but I don't know of any outside of maybe crazy amounts of Skyrim mods

Titan X is definitely for 4k/5k gaming, it's incredible overkill for any 1080/1440 gaming, 2/3 of that RAM will never get touched at those resolutions.

Yet from the benchmarks I've seen, a Titan X can't even keep current games at an average of 60FPS at 4K, much less newer games that are more graphic intensive that would use up that RAM. So basically, I think Titan X is meant to be a 4K gaming card used in SLI. The single card performance is honestly pretty underwhelming for the price.

I don't think a lot of Americans realize just how large Samsung is. As of 2014, Samsung's revenue was equal to 17% of South Korea's $1,082 billion GDP. They do so much more than TVs and Phones, even though that's what most Americans associate with them. They're basically the Korean GE. They're a multi-national insurance company, they are a heavy industry company building ships, tankers, bridges, skyscrapers, they're a chemical company, they own hotel chains & resorts, they're in the intelligence/security industry, they're a biologic/medical company, etc. It's pretty nuts how many diverse industries they are a part of.
And robotics. Basically, they're creating a physical infrastructure to help Skynet to win this time.

I've pretty much had the same opinion as you when it comes to single gpu performance at 4k. I assumed that 2x Titan Xs would be needed to play games at 4k with a "proper" 60fps. This video actually surprised me on how well a single Titan X does at 4k. But you can see it take a hit with Shadows of Mordor. With much apprehension, I'd say a single Titan X is acceptable at 4k: (Please ignore the somewhat idiotic Jayztwocents review)

The followup question should immediately be: how much of that RAM is actually usable?
On any card that doesn't have disabled pipelines, all of the memory is always just as fast as all the other memory.

It's only once you start binning the GPUs down to lower end cards that you run into the problem.

Put the upgrade in yesterday - I done goofed though. Went for a Gigabyte Z97x Gaming 7 motherboard and anArctic Cooler i30CPU cooler. Problem is the memory slots on that board are too close to the CPU so I had to cut some of the cooler case away to get it in.

Here's the thing - the heat sink fin on the top memory module is touching the outer plastic case of the cooler. So my question is am I being dumb even keeping it that way even temporarily - is it likely to melt the plastic and maybe even set it on fire ? (If it matters the case is a Silverstone FT02 so has exceptional air cooling and I'm not going to overclock anything atm).

If your ram heatsink gets hot enough to melt plastic then you've got other problems well before that.

RAM rarely needs cooling fins these days anyway. It's just the false consumer perception that "cooling fin = performance!".

There's no way it gets hot enough to melt the plastic, let alone set anything on fire.

Galax have released "gamer" ssd looks comparable to mx2o00 to me but not sure if there are any benefits. Pretty comparable price if you like the galax brand like i do. May pick one up just wish they came in 500gb.

The 3D NAND in the 850 Evo is supposed to eliminate the problem with the 840 Evo TLC NAND (and some say the original 840 has the same issue). There is also supposed to be another fix forthcoming from Samsung soon.
