Only ever had one Sapphire card, a 4870X2 that died after 18 months or so. RMA process was pretty quick and easy. So props to them for that. It was just a stock, reference ATI card without even a Sapphire sticker on it.

I'm looking into building a computer that will have both Windows and Mac on it. Should I put the operating systems on their OWN SSD or have them both on the same SDD? I checked NewEgg and AMD is about $300-400 cheaper than Intel's CPUs. Are the AMD processors worse even though they have 8 cores? What about video cards?

And in regards to SSD, is SandForce still the best controller out there?

Pretty sure they never were. Intel was always the gold standard, and Micron after that. Sandforce was better then Indilix, but they still have a lot of problems with compatibility and bugs I thought. I could be wrong though. I'd go with a Crucial or Samsung SSD personally, if not Intel. For what it's worth I've had zero problems with 3 Intel SSDs and a couple Crucials in several years worth of use. Within a week of replacing my office computers with new workstations that have PNY SSD's w/ Sandforce controllers one of the drives died.

There is no reason to go AMD. I don't know how you figure AMD is $300-400 cheaper unless you're buying stupid high end. If you're just picking up a 3470 or 4570 or 4670 (which is all you really need), I don't see how the price difference is more than $50-100 when you throw in a motherboard.

Yeah, fuck AMD for processors. Intell has been eating AMD alive for years now, no competition really. Its not about the amount of cores, its about the processing power of an individual core. Basically the old 2007 Intell C2D, like the E6850 have more processing power per core than 2010 AMD 6 core 1100T.

You forgot to mention that's only relevant for games. If you do encoding or other multithreaded stuff, AMD is a better choice than Intel at the same price point.

Gotchya. I think I was looking at the Sandy Bridge Extremes which are over $500 compared to the Ivy Bridges which are only like $200 or so. What about video cards? I haven't been keeping up with this at all in a long time. I think I have a 5870 in my desktop that I built years ago, lol.

edit: My partner does photography work, but, it's not nearly as heavy in processing as what other artists do. I want it to be a gaming computer (windows) and a photography computer (mac).

I think AMD and Nvidia are pretty close to each other price/performance wise. Personally I think Nvidia has had better driver support for the most part. I'd go for a 760 or 770 depending on your budget.

Cool. Here's a preliminary list:

Windows 7 (duh...haven't seen any reason to upgrade to 8)
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electr...=ATVPDKIKX0DER(x2)

Still trying to decide case, CPU cooler (might go Corsair CPU liquid), sound card (if I go that route), wireless card (or dongle), and motherboard. Any suggestions? 32GB memory (1600Mhz) is a must.

I know some people love to toss their money out the window... But

LOL, Ok lets start with the SSD, why 2? why not just one and a platter storage? Save $300

Ram... Really do you need 32GB? 16GB at the most and you will ever need 8 for gaming. Save$100 I mean seriously, I run a high end CAD station at work, pulling in entire vehicles of data in and I never go past 10 GB and I have 16 GB available.

The i7 might be overkill as well. If its only light photoshop, Im willing to bet you would not even notice the difference between an i7 and an i5, save another $200. also why are you going with ivy bridge, when haswell is out?

Save some cash and get your partner a nice gift instead, maybe buy yourself some new clothes or some shit. I hate when people throw money out like this....

Like I said, it's been a while since I've even looked at computer parts. It's also preliminary. Nothing's set in stone. God knows I normally look at parts for weeks to months before I even buy anything.

edit: Never built a computer with dual boot either. Want it to be fast enough for both of us. He's got terabytes worth of photos that he constantly edits, which is why I was thinking two of the SSDs. But, I guess a normal 2TB sized HDD would be OK with it.

Don't RAID SSD's. It's pointless. Like mkopec said, get a decent sized OS drive, and then platter storage for the rest.

Yeah, not sure about the dual boot either, either way its still overkill having 2 partitions 256GB each. Each of my 2 desktops have a 128gb ssd and im using roughly 70gb on each and 20 gb of that is because I use the sleep function of windows. Games see no performance gains on an ssd other than load times. So I never install them on the SSD. I know your partner would probably like to have Photoshop on the SSD or whatever other programs he uses to edit photos. Other than that, its all storage. Where the SSD shines is basically having your OS run on it.

Here is a good start....

I agree with mkopec, for the money of 2 x 512gb ssds you could do 1 x 256/512gb ssd + 4 x 1/2tb in raid 5 for decent enough speed and storage.

If you're into photography I hope you're planning to grab a 27"/30" 2560x1440/1600 monitor and at that resolution the 7970 is a cheaper alternative to the 770.

edit : damn i'm slow.

For the money he was going to spend I'd go with a better (quieter) case / cpu cooler. Something like the thermalright hr-02 macho and fractal xl something-something case.

edit 2 : and at least another hdd for raid 1 or 2 for raid 5.

Yeah, that was just a start for him. The case is something more of a personal choice. also for the mony, you just cannot beat that cooler. You would have to pay 2x or 4x to get any better and it would not be tat much better either.

I agree on more platter storage drives, especially with a photog, They are dirt cheap. The problem with that monitor would be the gaming. Would a 7970 be enough to run it? especially with the new upgraded games coming up with the PS4 and xbone coming out?

If you're thinking of just Ultra-ing everything and getting 60 fps, nope. But the benefits of that monitor (resolution, size, panel type) overcome the fact that you might have to play shit at 80-90% instead of mindlessly maxing everything.

Oh, and you can grab one from ebay for 300$ that overclocks to 120hz (there's another thread here with more details).

If you don't go 2560 you gotta go something withlightboost.

Fractal cases are sexy.

Mkopek list looks fine. No reason to not go Haswell at this point. And definitely get a nice monitor, 24"-30" IPS would be great for photoshop. The Dell Ultrasharps are always a good choice.

Well, I just thought that with the new games coming out this fall and further, that monitor would be hard to push with todays current cards othe than the $1000 ones. But if you say that $400 card can run games at 80% with 60fps, then, yeah.
