Does it really need a video card? And if it does, why not just put a 960 in it? I can't really see the real niche for a 950.

Yes, for the 4k @ 60 Hz through HDMI 2.0. And it has a lower power draw than the 960. This card is the perfect choice for an HTPC, it fills that niche very well.

Bonus: Microcenter accidentally gave me 6TB drives instead of 5TB drives but didn't charge me the difference. Schwing!

Building my HTPC/"Home Media/Network Server" today/tomorrow. Have everything but the case picked out:

CPU:Intel i5-6500T (using a 6500 til the T's come out)
Mobo:ASRock Z170 Exreme 6
Ram:Corsair Vengeance Series 8GB (2x4GB) DDR4-2666
GPU:EVGA GTX 950
SSD:Samsung 850 EVO 250GB
PSU:Corsair RMi Series 650W
Storage:
 • WD Green 5TB WD50EZRX x 2
 • WD Green 3TB WD30EZRX x 2
 • WD Green 2TB WD20EZRX x 1
If this is truely for a HTPC (no gaming), that is WAYYY overkill. Buy one of these and thank me later!

*edit* To clarify, the NUC makes a perfect media player (I use Kodi). Put your storage on the network (NAS).

Looked at those. They seem nice but not wanted I wanted to do. Also the setup I have is overkill, for sure. No question about that. But I didn't want to run a NAS, and I wanted to get the two x 3TB and the 2TB drives off of my main computer because I already have enough (4 TB of blacks) storage on my gaming PC. I may play a MOBA game or two on this rig from time to time just for kicks and giggles. Also needed the power to stream to my PC, the HTPC, and the downstairs TV at the same time from this rig so needed the additional CPU power.

Here's a question for peeps though: I got the system up and running last night. BIOS completely updated. Windows 10 x64 installed, drivers installed, 4:4:4 setup on the TV, etc. When I tested a few movies in VLC, I see stuttering in the video every 15~ or so seconds. I tried changing just about every setting in VLC people recommended to no avail. I tried CCCP and got the same thing, tried playing with the settings people had recommended there too. Tested playing through Plex in a browser too. It's just a slight jutter in the video, and it happens in multiple videos. My guess is it *could* be Windows 10, so I'm going to try 8.1 tonight to test that theory. I've also tested playing directly through the TV, and through the AVR (which has 4:4:4[email protected]/* <![CDATA[ */!function(t,e,r,n,c,a,p){try{t=document.currentScript||function(){for(t=document.getElementsByTagName('script'),e=t.length;e--;)if(t[e].getAttribute('data-cfhash'))return t[e]}();if(t&&(c=t.previousSibling:emoji_nose:{p=t.parentNode;if(a=c.getAttribute('data-cfemail':emoji_nose:{for(e='',r='0x'+a.substr(0,2)|0,n=2;a.length-n;n+=2)e+='%'+('0'+('0x'+a.substr(n,2)^r).toString(16:emoji_nose:.slice(-2);p.replaceChild(document.createTextNode(decodeURIComponent(e:emoji_nose:,c)}p.removeChild(t)}}catch(u){}}()/* ]]> */pass through), and also tested with the resolution set to 1080p rather than[email protected]/* <![CDATA[ */!function(t,e,r,n,c,a,p){try{t=document.currentScript||function(){for(t=document.getElementsByTagName('script'),e=t.length;e--;)if(t[e].getAttribute('data-cfhash'))return t[e]}();if(t&&(c=t.previousSibling:emoji_nose:{p=t.parentNode;if(a=c.getAttribute('data-cfemail':emoji_nose:{for(e='',r='0x'+a.substr(0,2)|0,n=2;a.length-n;n+=2)e+='%'+('0'+('0x'+a.substr(n,2)^r).toString(16:emoji_nose:.slice(-2);p.replaceChild(document.createTextNode(decodeURIComponent(e:emoji_nose:,c)}p.removeChild(t)}}catch(u){}}()/* ]]> */Sorta scratching my head so far. Hopefully the switch to 8.1 fixes it, which I'd be fine with.

Anyone have any ideas?

Hmm... no. Good idea, I just quickly read a few things and it seems like that may work. I'll test that and update. Thanks man.

Looking for advice on using my old PC as a media center as unobtrusively as possible. Right now I have it set up with my TV as the monitor, but I use teamviewer to control it from my new desktop 99% of the time. I basically just use it as a server and to watch things on my big screen. I feel like I'm not maximizing it however. I thought I'd find having a PC dedicated entirely to the TV more useful.

So while I was looking around for mice I spent some time looking at keyboards and had to ponder in amazement that people can justify $100 on a keyboard. What's so magical about sayRazer Blackwidow Chromato justify that over a $10 standard? I feel like such a simple hardware and programming gimmick seems like a $50 investment at best, but some places are selling it for $209.

Am I missing the summon significant other to tongue balls/cunt button?

Get a Logitech K400 and use that as your "remote". Just about the only Logitech product I'll ever recommend to anyone. They work very well for controlling HTPCs.

If you're looking for HTPC software check out XBMC or just use Plex.

Well it's a mechanical keyboard, the usual starting point for most mech boards are 80bucks, the reason being each key is a separate switch, in 95% of all current mech boards, it's a cherry switch, which is about $1 a switch of course less in bulk. These switches by razer are newly designed, probably cost a bit more since those other switches (cherry mx) are basically a 20 year design. Also seems ppl love to pay lots of money for LED lights.

But no, physically mechanical keyboards are 10000x better than your standard $10 or $20 dell keyboard or $70 logitech whatever.

I've typed on mechanical and still don't see the draw? Certainly not for the price. Guess I don't do enough typing to see what the big fuss is all about?

Can you expound on that 10000x better component. I've gamed on both, worked on both. Saw 0 difference in performance factors that actually effected the average user.

Are my Key Strokes/APMs too low to see a difference? I'm not as good as I once was, but as far as gaming is concerned a $10 ms kb paid the bills in college at local LANs.

Quantifying the differences between them would probably be difficult in any sort of meaningful way. I mean maybe if you sat down and really lined out the pressure required and activation point (or whatever the technical terms for those are) you'd build a data driven reason mechanical are 'better.' At the end of the day it'll be preference though. If you look at all the different types of keyboards and switches you'll see the options available are really vast. And you can treat your keyboard like any other accessory, like speakers, headphones, monitor, etc... And if you find one that is substantially more comfortable to you, then yeah, maybe your APM will increase. Just saying it will because you switched is over selling though.

Personally I love mine. After using it for a while I got used to not bottoming out which increases my typing speed and decreases discomfort from constantly hitting the plate all day while typing.

Some are worth the money but ignore the bling. Some of the best built keyboards and also the most bland looking. Take a look at Topre or Filco. There's also a lot to talk about regarding keycaps. The profile, material and thickness make big difference on how a keyboard feels. Me personally I'm a big fan of Cherry MX Black (smooth linear switches medium weight) and thick (1.5mm) keycaps.

In a few months I'll have all the pieces required to build something like this. Split spacebar, compact layout, fully programmable.

MY HP M9150F Is continuously shitting the bed. Even though I haven't needed anything but an old person computer recently I think with the upcoming job change i'm going to get something i can do CAD and game on for the home.

I tried to get close to this deal but apparently the graphics card is out of stock and that was what made the deal. It's probably overkill for what I need but I don't want to get something and have to upgrade bullshit as soon as I get actually buy a game.
http://slickdeals.net/f/8384991-hp-e...src=SiteSearch

I know i'm being hugely general but if you guys know of any deals on prebuilts or component setups I don't have a big problem putting one together, i'm just clueless on the current state of desktops and don't want to do a huge amount of research on this but dont want to be a dumbass and bottleneck myself or something. My monitor is a 24" benq that's about 8 years old too, so i'm wondering if I should get a new one too. I'm really used to having 2 monitors from work anyway.

Thanks in advance, I know it's kind of a no guidance question but i'd just like to hear what the smart people would do if they were looking to spend no more than 1200 on a setup with the shit I currently have.
