Holy shit, updated to the 1.0.5 firmware and this thing is disconcertingly silent now. After having that background noise for the last few months it is almost jarring. Thanks for the heads up.
+1, and i took the time to put in that freakin usb cable when the pump has already been installed, took 15 minutes. The link software with the firmware update > motherboard fan software.

Turns out i put the backplate on upside down, so its not cooling 100%, I was wondering why it wasn't cooling very well compared to the stock hsf.

When the difference between the i5 4670 and 4670k is ~$6 is there any reason not to get the 4670k?

Yeah, they suck for pulling crap like this. I always wanted Intel AMT on my desktop but not enough to give up on overclocking. Same shit with motherboard chipsets but there's hope forthat.

edit : not that it matters since the K cpus don't have the features.

Yeah, the msi board has a setting to run the chip at turbo, so you could just do that with a non k chip and get 3.8-9 ghz. Kind of a decent compromise.

I am struggling with picking a new monitor. For the past 6 years I have been gaming on a 24" 1920x1200 and I fully realize I will most likely have to get used to 1080 going forward. I have researched the 3 monitor surround and I just do not feel the it is worth it yet, I think the bezel would annoy me and I think the 3 monitors is overkill for some games. I think I prefer the PLP setup the most but the support isn't there for that setup just yet. My hope is in the nearish future somebody will start producing affordable curved monitors like the Ostendo, just not for 7k. Or perhaps DELL or LG start making 3 monitors in one case with little to no bezel. Until that happens I think I will stay away from surround gaming.

I want a bigger monitor and I just can't decide what to do, do I pick up on of those 21:9 Ultrawides? Or do I get a 32" or even a 37"?

With the 21:9 I will lose about 1.5 inches of display area height vs my current monitor, but I will gain 6 inches in display width. Would really appreciate feedback from you guys as I have been starring at monitors online for over a week and I just can't pull the trigger.

My current hardware:
Asus Sabertooth Z77
GeForce GTX 580 1536MB 384-bit (will most likely upgrade at time of monitor purchase or shortly after)
i7-2600k Sandy Bridge 3.4Hz

When you say bigger, are you saying higher resolution or screen size? You could always get yourself a plasma or lcd tv that is 1080p, and itll more than likely be 3d so you can get you some 3d glasses and buy the 3d support from nvidia (40 bucks) and have a good ol time.

Or you could get yourself one of them korean knock off apple cinema displays everyone raves about.

Call me crazy but going from a 24" to a 27" doesn't feel like much of an upgrade.

Any feed back on the Ultrawides?

I have a 24" 1920x1200 monitor at home sitting next to my Girlfriend's 1080p 27" (both Samsung) which I also use at work. They are nearly the same height but hers is (of course) wider. I actually prefer my home 24" over the 27" for gaming.

If you were going to upgrade it wouldn't necessarily be for the size, but for the IPS panel and higher resolution. If those are features you want then the upgrade could be worth it, unless you have money to burn it might not be worth a size only upgrade.

I want upgrade both, but 3 inches doesn't seem worth it even with 1440. I think I want 30" at a minimum and a minimum of 1920x1080, though I would prefer an even higher res.

And how is 3D Gaming, is it distracting or immersive? Do I need a special monitor on top of glasses? I read something about needing a TN Monitor.

The size is more of a function of how close you are sitting to the screen at that point. I find the 27" just at the edge of too large, I can't imagine at a normal desk distance gaming on something that is 30".

For 3D gaming I would personally wait for the Oculus Rift to be released, I've tried one and it is downright amazing. I've never gamed on a 3D monitor but if it is anything like the terrible stereoscopic "3D" that you get from televisions then I would say don't waste your money.

It might not seem like much the upgrade from 1080 to 1440 but it's a 77% increase in pixels and a 25% increase in surface area.

Word of advice, dont go up to 30" or bigger on a computer monitor if you are sticking with 1080p resolution. Looks kinda crappy sitting a foot or two away from it. If you're going to splurge and go up to 30+ inches, you really should go 1440p or better, but you're talking a big hike in price.

The 27" 1440p monitors are the absolute best bang for your buck right now. Hell, I paid $300+ apiece for my 27" 1920x1200 monitors just 3-4 years ago.

IDK man, hovering over the computer kills me these days, not like when i was younger. Making the pc more like a console with wireless peripherals and a big screen allows me to comfortably relax instead of tensly sitting at a desk focusing on a screen. However, I do tend to sit at the desk, so I mounted the tv to the wall and it can adjust so its best in each situation.

first, I wouldn't recommend the ultrawides. I have a dell 2560x1080 (29") and while its nice I also have a eBay korean 27" 2560x1440 (diff PC) and that is way, way, way better. Tons more desktop pixels is just better. 2560x1080 is also just weird for game cutscenes, etc with big black borders.

Remember 4k is just starting to be big on TV monitors right now, its still not practical for attaching to a PC since HDMI right now is limited to 30hz at 4k rez, that should be fixed by the end of this year. By next year you should be able to pick up a nice 50-60" 4k TV that hooks up at 60hz via hdmi for $1-2k, which will be crazy good for gaming, especially if you attach a ps4 or xbone to it.

I currently run dell widescreen plus a 55" LED-TV off my PC, the dell for browsing and most games, the LED for movies/tv and couch type games (shooters etc). Its a great config, but you wanna be at least six feet away from the LED-TV to not fuck your sight up, don't ever try to make a 1080p LED TV your primary monitor.

You can also think about eyefinity, two or three 2560x1440 side by side with bezels removed may be amazing, eyefinity or not. Personally I think two 2560x1440s side by side (no eyefinity) is great, one for main display and one for all the extra shit, most games nowadays support windowed full screen mode and it lets you smoothly transition from one monitor to another.
