I've had an old Samsung that is 1920x1200 for the past 7 years. Honestly, can't even imagine going back to x1080, lol. Love the widescreen.

Newegg is running a sale for Z87 Motherboards and 4th Gen Intel CPUs.

I've been wanting to build a new PC so I might go with one of the combos. Which motherboard would you guys recommend with the i5 4670k?

GIGABYTE GA-Z87X-UD4H LGA 1150 Intel Z87 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
or
ASRock Z87 Extreme6 LGA 1150 Intel Z87 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Here are the other two options, but they are quite a bit more expensive. If they are worth it I wouldn't mind though because the combo deal is $80-100 off:

ASUS SABERTOOTH Z87 LGA 1150 Intel Z87 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
MSI Z87 MPOWER LGA 1150 Intel Z87 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Extreme OC Flagship High Performance Triple CFX/ SLI Platform Intel Motherboard

The computer will be for gaming and to last for 5+ years.

I've never had a motherboard live past 3.5 years without trauma or tragedy. Then again I run my computers constantly, and my house is damp as fuck.

5+ years is pretty rough with 4k coming.
Yeah, stretching a processor and mobo for 5 years is going to really be pushing it, but you'll definitely have to upgrade video cards once, if not twice in that 5 year period to be able to play current games decently.

My last build lasted me 4 years, with one video card upgrade during that time(built system with a 9800GT in '08, then upgraded to SLI 4870s in '10), I'm shooting for about the same on my current build. I built a system with a 3570k processor and 660Ti video card last year, I don't forsee needing to upgrade that 660TI this year, but I probably will next year. And then 1.5-2 years after that, a whole new build will probably be needed, at that point any new video card will probably be severely bottlenecked by the CPU

Id maybe lean towards the ASRock, as it has 3 PCIE 3.0 slots, the gigabyte only has 2(and one additional 2.0 slot)

At this point in time, theres really no practical performance difference between 3.0 and 2.0, but that might not be the case several years down the line when we get into video cards that need 4,6,8 or more gigs of RAM to really push those 4K resolutions and the textures that go with them. Basically, the ASRock might be *slightly* more future-proof.

The gigabyte does have a few more USB 3.0 ports though, it has 6 on the back panel as opposed to ASRocks 4. Both support up to 4 USB 3.0 ports in the front as well(if your case is designed for it)

Why do motherboards and computer towers still have more USB 2.0 than 3.0? Shouldn't it be the other way around, now?

USB 3.0 isn't important for anything other than external storage.

That said, the Asus z87 pro has 6 USB 3.0 ports on the back and zero 2.0 ports, the only 2.0 ports are from the motherboard headers. So yeah, the corner is turning. 2.0 slots should eventually go away.

is ASrock a good motherboard manufacturer? They always came across as cheap to me, maybe it's the the branding.

They're fine. They do kinda brand themselves as making commodity parts, but they're fine.

I'm a big fan of this Asus z87 Pro. It actually took all the fun out of tweaking the build afterwards, because everything just worked perfectly.

I ended up using an ASRock Z77 Pro4 in my girlfriend's computer, so far I have no reason to complain.

I need a suggestion for a good router under $100. Not looking to do anything fancy just solid connectivity, gigabit wired port, and at least an N.

If you have some networking knowledge or want to learn you can't go wrong with a Mikrotik (951g-2hnd is ~80$). If you don't, I'd still say mikrotik because they're awesome and I'm a fanboy.

I want something plug and play, not looking to jump through any sort of hoops to get it going.

Trying to build a budget gaming pc, but I haven't built anything in several years and I'm struggling to piece things together. I'm only looking to spend $600-650 on this. I've looked at benchmarks to try and pick both the CPU (FX-6300 vs i3-3220 and GPU (650 ti boost 2gb vs 7850 2gb), but am still unsure I've made the best value selections. Any feedback on things to swap out and stay within my budget?

Don't do amd, for gaming the i3 is still the better choice. IMO If I were you is save another $200 and go i5 4670K or scrimp on your video card until you get more cash later. You will get much more longevity out of that system in the long run.

Do you have a micro center within driving distance? If so you could save tons of cash for a proc and mo-bo combo, especially if they still have the last gen in stock, you could probably get that i5 3570 for $169.
