Right now the Nvidia 760s are a really nice sweet spot for price & performance. You can get one for $250-ish, and it should last you several years. You can spend $400 and maybe get 15-20% more performance, but it really isn't worth it imho. By that same note, skimping and saving $50 is a noticeable performance dropoff to something like a 660. It's worth it to pay the extra $50 for a 760 over a 660, that's a good 30-40% performance difference.

Fourthed, and I'll also chip in that your CPU doesn't really factor in to things much at all. Even if it's a bottleneck in some rare games/situations, for the most part it won't have much effect on gaming performance or make it less worthwhile to have a faster video card. I'm rocking a Q9550 still, but with a 680. Not many games are CPU bound.

Nice, I can handle four recommendations. Poking around I came across this guyhttp://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...&sku=M452-0762(TD doesn't charge me tax in CA). Seems like a popular card, it has more reviews over at Newegg but it's out of stock.

I'm checking out 3tb hard drive and what's the deal with those? All the top rated cards at Newegg have like 700 reviews and are wedged at 3 eggs. Perusing over the reviews looks like most of the recent drives have serious problems. What are my options there?

My video card has died too. Faint burning smell to boot! I was using a EVGA 460 GTX and had no plans of upgrading for a while, so performance isn't that important to me. Money is, though. I was thinking of just picking up a 650 since they look to be the cheapest card around($90 after rebate) that's still produced.

Any reason I shouldn't?

Also, I value noise level and I hate how loud the fans on my 460 get when they spin up. I'm going to guess most 760 cards have the same problem.

Oh, forgot to ask, PCI-E 3.0 will fit into earlier versions of PCI-E?

Yes, in fact PCI-E 3.0 isn't really fleshed out right now so it doesn't make much of a difference if at all. The system will drop the gen of the card to match your slot.

My brother got the 650 Ti Boost and it's really quiet, to the point that he asked me if it was actually working at all.

So I got a desktop from cyberpower (4770k, 16gigs, SSD, 850psu, MSI g45, 770gtx SLI x2)... So I hook it up and its a dead mobo, RMA'd. 2nd round, computer isn't reading SLI. I fuck around with different drivers and okay I got SLI now. Turning on SLI causes my video to freeze every 5 seconds, driver crashes (some automatically restore and some just hang), random BSODs(DPC Watch Dog Violation), and Kernal Power 41 events. So far I have tried old and beta drivers, and my BIOS is up to date. I will try swapping card slots tomorrow, in the mean time does anyone have any other ideas? 850 watts should be enough right?

Should be plenty of power, each 770 is only ~200 watts at max power. The PSU as a whole could be bad though...

No issues running single card mode, could a bad psu be the factor? Fucking aye, it's like these motherfuckers who build these comps don't stress test them.

If it's a psu problem you should be able to see it in the rails. A psu that can't handle the load will likely have voltage droop beyond tolerance.

They probably don't stress test them individually if that's what you mean. Your lucky if they even turn them on more than once man. That's why I would build my own.

Watch Dog Timer... hmm... that sounds like firmware to me.

So, I'm looking to build something for around $800. Any builds you guys would recommend? Is it even worth building a PC yourself these days, or can I just buy it pre-built and save myself the trouble?

Usually cheaper to do it yourself.

What are you going to use it for? Gaming? Work? Just some light web use/email?

The new Samsung EVO SSDs are damn nice. Performance close to their PRO drives, but priced like a normal 840 drives(actually cheaper with this promo code)

250GB EVO SSD - $164 ($183 - 10% off promo code VME10BTS)
120GB EVO SSD - $98 ($109 - 1-% off promo code VME10BTS)

I just bought one, no idea when it will get here though, they are back-ordered. VERY good deal. The Pros are still slightly better, and their random read/write is better, but I wouldn't really recommend them for most people over the EVOs unless money is truly no object.

grabbed a 250GB, thanks for the code. Hoping it will fit in my laptop, if not my desktop gets a bit happier.
