Actually to back this up even more, here were my results with just changing out my proc in Destiny 2, which is a highly optimized game on PC. Before the change I was getting roughly 70-90 frames, depending on what was going on in game. After change constant 120+ Same settings, pretty much ultra @1080p.

70-90 fps sounds entirely acceptable to me.
The gain lessens or disappears as you go to 1440 or 4k.

I've bolded the key issue with your viewpoint on this.

Use-cases vary wildly in this hobby, as they always have. There is no universal "this is all you need" even at the very top end of performance. A 3570k might be good enough for you, but that's you. If you've read my posts in this thread you will probably have noticed that I try my best to give several use-case examples for people because I'm extensively familiar with how tastes and needs vary so much. You game (if I'm reading your posts correctly) at 4k 60fps, and probably get less than 60 fps pretty frequently. This is not acceptable to some people, let alone those who game at above 60 fps.

Also, keep in mind that he's talking about Destiny 2 which is one of the least demanding games around. And Div2 was capping one of my OC'd 8700k cores out constantly, let alone a 3570k.

It took significant amounts of effort from the enthusiast community to sway the "2500k is enough" crowd to stop derailing conversations with their incorrect statements. A 3570k isn't much better at this point.

To take your original point and steer it in a middle-ground direction: A GPU should definitely be your focus when upgrading, as you will 90% of the time benefit more from it than upgrading your CPU. Then you should focus on the rest. However, there comes a point where the CPU is going to switch with the GPU in that priority list. This will be dependant on many different factors.

The overall push to upgrade hardware is also spearheaded by Microsoft's desire for Win10 to conquer the world. If you have a decent chip, SSD, 16 GB RAM on a Win7 then your biggest concern is still the graphics card.

You're not wrong, although I think you guys are reading more into my post than I intended. My point was merely that being a few generations behind on CPU is nowhere near as bad as it once was, and that being behind the same number of generations on a GPU is far worse.
Wasn't saying never upgrade, if it helps your situation then certainly do so. I'm no stranger to the lure of the shiny new thing, I'm one of the suckers that actually bought a Founder's Edition card.

Lol, 2500k's are/were such an awesome chip! It skewed things! I kinda think it was the CPU version of the 1080 Ti.

I still have my 2500K box, it just needs an ssd and optical drive. I was gonna hook it up for the kid so he could set up a dedicated stremaing rig. I also kept the 3570k chip and mo bo I could build around for a extra everquest box or some shit, or jsut ebay it for a $150 or something.

Computer died.

Tried everything I could think of. Motherboard had lights but the computer just would not start. It would not even try to spin fans, which I thought was fucking weird, given that it clearly had standby power.

Finally said what the fuck, replaced the CMOS battery and now it's working again.

Fucking hell.

Thinking about doing something like this. Leaning Mini ITX for fun and it's smaller and wife won't be as annoyed by it. I know I can get it cheaper. Might add a AIO Water Cooler. Then it's just picking a monitor.

Probably worth waiting for the new AMD releases I'd imagine.

AMD Mini ITX Total: USD $903

AMD Ryzen 5 Pinnacle Ridge 2600 3.4Ghz Up To 3.9Ghz Cache 16MB 65W AM4 [Box] - 6 Core - YD2600BBAFBOX - With AMD Wraith Stealth Cooler USD $165

Asus ROG STRIX X470-I GAMING AM4 DDR4 (2 Slot, Max:32GB) Mini ITX USD $198

Gigabyte Radeon RX 580 8 GB CoreClock (1.257 GHz) Gaming 8G USD $200

Team T-Force Vulcan 16 GB (2x8 GB) DDR4-3200 288-pin DIMM USD $121

Samsung 860 Evo 500GB SSD 2.5\" USD $83

Corsair CX650 (2017) 650W (80+ Bronze) ATX CX (2017) USD $55

Fractal Design Define Nano S Mini ITX Desktop USD $81

Weird shit happens sometimes. I spent an entire day cursing at a new pc that wouldn't boot. Swapped memory sticks around, tried another vid card, tried integrated graphics, took everything out and rebuilt it with another PSU, nothing got it going. Turned out the PS2 keyboard I'd been using for years was drawing more power than that particular mainboard felt like supplying on that port. It worked well enough to respond to keyboard power on and light up the num lock led so it looked like everything was fine, but it dragged the whole system down with it.

Just wanted to recap after finally getting my system together.

I had the bent pin(s) on the CPU socket and had to wait for a new motherboard, which finally came in. Since I had basically built the entire fucking thing several times already, my cables are a fucking mess and the sides aren't even on it right now and pics might not happen anytime soon (or ever when I forget this conversation). Combine that with me fucking up and having all the drives plugged in at the start instead of just the boot drive, causing the hidden system shit to get put on my physical drive instead of my M.2 SSD (where I installed Windows, obviously), and causing it to only be able to use 2TB of the 8TB for that reason, which lead me to use a partition program to delete that partition, which made it so the next time I rebooted it didn't recognize any disks at all and made me fresh reinstall Windows and all the drivers AND redownload 16GB of Path of Exile a second time in the same day, when I already missed the league launch...cosmetics are the least of my concern right now.

Anyway, currently I'm not doing any overclocking, as I just wanted to make sure the fucking thing worked. I'll try to mess with that sometime soon.

I'll copy my build below so if anyone is interested they can take a look, but a few comments first.

I have the Fractal Meshify C Dark case, and it is really nice. I love the tinted glass too, looks way better than clear in my opinion. I added a fuckload of fans just because I always do, and it is virtually silent, and really, really cool temp-wise. One of the fans I put on the top vent makes it extremely tight to get the supplemental CPU power plugs in, so I had to remove the fan and then squeeze it in after the MB was in place and plugged in. That was a bit of a bitch, but if you don't max out the fans on the case you wouldn't care.

The CPU cooler I used covers the first memory slot, to where it is unusable, which currently isn't a problem for me, but could be for someone else.

The graphics card I bought covers 2 of the SATA plugs (depending upon which slot you use for the card), but they work fine if you just plug them in before the card. It also fits even with my additional fans mounted to the front, which is nice.

I don't give a fuck about RGB, so no experience with any of that, and none of the fans I bought work with it either. But the MB and graphics card cycle colors, if that is your thing.

That fucking M2 drive, I'm really glad the person mentioned that I had the wrong one. Not that a normal SSD is a slouch, but holy fuck. Windows boots almost instantly. It is so fucking nice. Thanks!

The monitor is amazing, except for the heretofore mentioned "fingerprint" in the screen, which I'm waiting for the replacement to get here. Hopefully that one is fine, I really hate returning all this shit repeatedly. I love this monitor though, and the RTX2080 powering it. I haven't done anything but Path of Exile with it yet (and porn!) so I don't really know what its limits are, but I set it to 1440p with 144Hz, so we'll see if I notice anything lag or stutter ever. Speaking of, if I choose vsync in game, does that mean it will force 144? Or will my monitor adjust to what the card is capable of doing in that game? And where the hell do I do gsync? They both should have it, how do I turn it on? And do I want to?

Thanks to everyone that gave advice and helped with my decisions on what to purchase. I really appreciate it.

Here is my purchased build, with the exception that I replaced the 860 EVO 500GB M.2 with a 970+ EVO 500GB M.2 because of the NVMe or whatever it is called:

I think this is the final list. It was all purchased from Amazon or Newegg though, despite what some of the links might say. The difference on almost all of them was minimal, and I'd rather keep it consolidated.

Re: vsync question. It depends on the type of vsync the program uses, but just consider 144 as your 60 from now on when thinking about this stuff (multi monitors aside)

This should help with the gsync question https://www.blurbusters.com/gsync/gsync101-input-lag-tests-and-settings/14/

Hardware issue resolved, new mobo didn't fix the issue and presented the same failure point as the prior ASUS, exchanged the proc and I am back to working again. Very weird that it failed so early especially considering I was babysitting the temps the first week and it never hit a point where it'd be in danger. Edit: No stability issues leading up to it either.
