I may just blow up the budget and try to build/buy a 3070 or 3080 system and attempt some mining on the side to recoup some of the cost. Right now it looks worth it, but I haven't researched crypto mining enough to know if the current rates are sustainable. It is slim pickings for a 3070 or 3080 system. I could drive a little over an hour and get a 3700x /3070 cyberpower system for $1500, or a MSI Aegis 10700kf/3080 for 2200... or just wait and hope 3070/3080 availability changes in the next month or two.

Would a single 3070/3080 be even worth trying to mine? Seems like it wouldn't

From what I'm seeing a 3070 would net about $200-250 a month right now? Seems worth it for little effort, and a big reason why I've looked at upping my budget.

I assume you mean that as it going 24/7 and essentially just doing that to hit that amount?

Yes. Last month a 3070 where I am at would have hit about $250ish net going 24/7. Gaming time would obviously cut into that. Napkin math would put it at about $0.35 per hour.

I really dont understand mining in general, but it sounds like i should set up a farm for my 3070s

I got x570 Aorus Master (yes, I know it's an expensive board and I could easily use cheaper, but I wanted a variety of the features on the more expensive boards). Box says it's ready for Ryzen 3000, so I'm assuming I'm going to need to flash the bios. Question is, do I need everything installed to do it on this board? Or can I just power the board and do it?

Guess I'll rtfm while I see if anyone has any thoughts

Edit: Looks like I can do it with the motherboard alone and nothing else.

seems like if you want the full rgb experience you would be better off with a dedicated controller to offload the work away from the MB

Re: mining, remember to factor in power costs. Most (if not all) also increase the per KW/h price as your overall usage increases on a tiered system.

I just read a recent report that the DOA rate on Ryzen 5000 series CPUs and X570 motherboards is pretty insanely high - as much as 20%. Is this actually something that is a known problem, or is it just likely that the site running this article has a paid sponsorship from Intel?

check out NiceHash if you want to get into mining! Easy guides. It's insanely profitable right now... like 5:1 on $ to power input. I got a used B-stock 1080ti from EVGA for $400 and it's already pumped out its weight in gold in about 6months just leaving it on when I go to work. The 1080ti's and 1070s are still great for mining. 1080ti's specifically with a software tweak called EthPill.

wow just checked EVGA even all the old b-stock GPUs are out of stock. F

I've got an EVGA 1080Ti FTW3 as my main gaming rig setup and plan to upgrade sometime in the next year or so. Never gamed on it much, and was thinking about doing this. Would you say it's good passive side income even from a gaming PC?
