I just think anything above 1440p is a joke period. Within the next year we're going to see some amazing 1440p monitors hitting the market.

You always have the early adopters willing to throw down their money on crazy things like this though. The guy asked if $750 was well spent on a bog standard overclock oriented Classified 980. I said no and still think an upcoming Titan would be a better spend for that kind of money. (All of which is stupid overkill).

The Acer XB270HU is supposed to be the holy grail of monitors when it comes out. 1440p , 144hz, IPS panel, G-SYNC.

But no one's actually gotten to play with one yet, so who the fuck knows. It will definitely drive down the price of the other GSYNC panels currently on the market.

I wouldn't even consider buying something that's not 120hz+ at this point for serious gaming.

Decided to pick up one of these:

Amazon.com: LG Electronics UM65 34UM65 34-Inch Screen LED-Lit Monitor: Computers Accessories

If you have a corner desk or want a wider FoV without an annoying bezel, this is pretty great for it. One corner has a bit of light bleed(which seems to be standard for IPS panels these days, I'm used to it) and there is an ever so slight amount of gamma shift due to the angle of sides to your head. Well worth the price both in games and productivity if you're only using one monitor now.

Looks like a solid build. I would seriously consider a 4GB 290x video card for ~$230. It's significantly more power for not much more money, probably last you a good 6-12 months longer than a 960.

For a lamen... what's the difference between these, and say just a 34 inch LCD/LED TV? (or probably 32") I assume a much better display with much higher refresh rates?

And do you use dual monitors now? If you do, do you think you'll miss the 2nd screen to put stuff on?

That LG monitor is basically just a 27" 1080p monitor that is roughly 1/3 wider than normal. Its like 1.33 1080p monitors. Honestly, I don't see the point unless you flat-out can't fit 2 monitors into the space you are working in, as 2 good 1080p monitors would be not only cheaper, but MUCH more screen real-estate. You do get the benefit of not having a bezel in the middle, it's just 1 big screen, but you really aren't talking about *that* much more space, for a real premium in price, but if you are wanting to display 2 separate images/programs, it's still going to be fairly cramped.

If I were going to think about ultra-wide, it would have to be something like this to make it worthwhile, IMHO:
Amazon.com: LG Electronics UM95 34UM95 34-Inch Screen LED-Lit Monitor: Computers Accessories.

At that point, you're talking about a 1440p monitor in an extra-wide 27"-equivalent format.

Even still, I can't imagine not just getting 2 nice 27" 1440p monitors for $200 less than this thing costs. 1/3 more screen just isn't that much, it would be really hard to go back to after using 2 monitors(I currently have a 1440p 27" and a 1200p 28"). Ultra-wides should really be at least 50% bigger than their comparable standard-resolution equivalent, to make them worthwhile. 33% just doesn't seem like a significant amount of extra space for the premium that you pay for it. If you were talking 33% more space for 50% more price, I could see an argument for that. But 33% more space for about 200-300% more price is nuts.

LG had some curved Ultrawide at CES that looked like pure sex for video games.

As I mentioned, I have a corner desk(Crone, this make 2 monitors impractical). I like it, it's lasted 10 years with very little wear. Buying a comparable desk would make two regular monitors more expensive.

That personal reason aside, I have two monitors at work. I prefer that setup because I often look at 3+ windows simultaneously. At home, it's usually just game + browser, or two browser windows split out, one being a stream or youtube. Or a movie + browswer. I'm rarely looking at more than 2 windows at the same time at home.

Most films fit 21:9, so no more horizontal black bars, whatever that might be worth to you.

Lastly, you glossed completely over the fov point, which I think is actually the best part. I get to see more of some games. WoW and D3 will display more of the battlefield. In games where that doesn't matter, I just play in windowed + browser for easier simultaneous viewing.

Honest question: what would those 2 good 1080p monitors cost? I haven't been in the monitor market since I bought some of the first 27" IPS panels back in 2007(some Korean NEC knockoff...Doublesight 263N) for $700. I'm not sure using the 34UM95 as a price comparison is fair. The resolution required for fullscreen gaming is punishing and it's almost 3x the price of 34UM65, the only real difference between the two being the resolution. Why does the ultrawide have to be 1440p to be worthwhile?

BTW, the extra screen space is closer to 50%. My old monitor was 21" across and I gained 5" on both sides.

You can get really good 24" 1080p monitors for ~$200, and good 27" 1080p monitors for ~$250 anymore. Obviously lower quality ones can be had for even less than that.

Decent 27" 1440p monitors are in the $300-$350 range.

The ultrawides still look bad ass, and the extra field of view/screen space is awesome. I suppose it's true , that if you wanted to have the same "effect" of dual monitors, you can just go windowed mode on any game.

I have dual ASUS monitors, and they were $200 each, 2 years ago and I'm confident there are better ones out there now for the same price.

If you don't have the room for dual monitors, I can totally see using an ultra wide to maximize the space you have.

I don't mind the idea of ultrawide, they just seem REALLY overpriced for what you get. Take a $250 monitor, increase it in size by 33%, charge 250% more. Doesn't seem quite right.

Your numbers are off, which I detailed in my previous post. 50% increase in width, 120% increase in price. If you're only looking at screen surface area, maybe that isn't worth it for you. I would have continued using one monitor if it wasn't for the fov gains.
