May finally upgrade from my i5 2500k. Doing more multi-monitor, multi-program stuff with twitch streams, browsers, gaming, and netflix or streaming now.

My 5820k works great already for that OC'ed to 4.4 GHz. Game on monitor one, movie/youtube/stream on monitor two, browser on three.

A 5820k is a whole different class of processor we're talking about. Of course it works great.

I went back and read through the last 40 pages or so of this thread. Based on that info it would be silly of me to buy all the components for a new system right now. As Mist said to someone else I should wait until September. So September it is, thanks for the info I will be back in a month to get approval on my parts. Really hope those Skylake leaked prices are true.

Comes to the thread saying he doesn't have time to build his own computer, ends up reading 40 pages of the thread. lol

I know, what an asshole! After yesterday I had already wasted more time than I could spare, so waiting til September actually gives me peace of mind and allows me to focus on my Home Improvement projects.

If you have a MicroCenter near you, you may want to be on the lookout for some of the CPU/Mobo/and/or/Ram combos they'll likely have here in the next couple days/weeks.

Ok I'll move out of the windows 10 thread. I have a dual boot now of windows 10 and windows 7 while I migrate to windows 10. The IT guy put both on and upgraded thru 10 and only did the initial install of windows and I'm going to do the rest. However my windows 7 goes thru about 30 updates and fails about 3/4 of them. It updates sucessfully service pack 1 but most of the recommended updates and almost all of the option updates give a failed message.

Any leads? I cleaned the update history and tried it again with no luck.

I have a really arcane piece of hardware with a custom driver I would really like to get working if I can. It's the whole push for the dual boot.

After it puts in about 1/3 of them and fails at the rest according to the list if you check for updates again it just hangs forever. Googled serveral fixes but none seem to work.

Windows 7 from early install disks is annoying. Used to have to reinstall for clients and if you checked all boxes to update at once shit would break. Had better luck installing updates in small batches, or trying to guess which ones were related and not going to fight each other. It's like the updates never knew which order they should work in or which should be unavailable until others were installed. Never had the issue with windows 8, though, so I think it's a specific 7 problem?

silly question but have you rebooted then tried them again?
Only a dozen times. I think I'm on the right track now (crosses fingers). I downloaded the first few updates and installed which included the service pack. I let it check for updates for an hour. Did a selective boot and it listed 230 updates which it is isntalling now which takes forever. So far in the history list the only one that failed was IE 11, no big loss.

We'll see.

HARDOCP - Gaming Benchmarks - Intel Skylake Core i7-6700K IPC Overclocking Review

HARDOCP's review shows DD4 memory speeds mattering a lot.

"My thought is if you are going to be moving to a Skylake platform for gaming, you should be shooting for no less than 2666MHz RAM."

Really that should be 2800MHz though, because 2800MHz sticks don't really cost any more than 2666 and 2800 seems to be where they top out before you have to go up from 1.2 volts.

Why in the world are they benchmarking graphics performance at a 640x480 setting? That's basically worthless information.

From what little I can tell, it's looking like another generation of processors that really won't matter a whole lot for gaming performance. Most gamers would get a much larger boost putting money into a new high-end video card , rather than a new CPU/mobo, but that's been the case for quite a while now (assuming your CPU is reasonable...from the last 3-4 years, not dirt ass old). You're looking at low single-digit performance gains over last-gen Haswell processors.

All those benchmarks might be fucking worthless if DX12's changes to the utilization of the whole CPU/memory/GPU architecture ends up making a big difference.

I do think DX12 could have a much, much larger influence on gaming than any of these new processors by themselves(comparing DX11 to DX11 across processors)

is USB 3.1 backwards compatible with USB 3.0 hubs? i.e., if upgrading to a motherboard that supports 3.1, will the front USB ports on my chasis see the benefit?
