I can't wait until my car is RGB.

Fuck, it is.

Anyway, I have an old I7 4770K and a GTX 550 Ti w/ 4gb for a gfx card. What is the most reasonable cost effective upgrade to the card alone at this point and will it be 10%, 50%, 2x better? I imagine at some point the newest cards outstretch my cpu/mobo/etc.

I don't have an answer to your question, and am currently using a 7850. But I'm waiting for the pascal cards to come out in the hopes I can pick up a 970 cheap.

Waiting until next gen to pick up a 970/980 seems like a good idea then. I don't think I've paid over 200 for a gfx card in years and I don't think I can stomach 600.

Thanks

A 970 would probably be 2.5-3x better framerate in games.

I had SLI 660TIs and swapping out to a single 970 was just about a wash in performance (but without the SLI headaches)

Seeing as how a single 660Ti would beat your 550Ti by a fair margin im pretty confident a 970 would be well over 2x more powerful an possibly approaching 3x

If you get 30fps in a game now, a 970 would push you into the 70-80 range easily on the same settings.

Also, i have an i5 3750k so your processor is even better than mine. A 970 would do wonders for you.

And are you saying your 550Ti had 4gb of RAM or your system as a whole? If its your system, get another 4gb chip to slap in there and get up to 8gb total. 4gb is a little light nowadays for system RAM

I knew there was a reason I stopped buying EVGA cards. My 980 Ti started giving me coil whine last crazy this last weekend. Schon of a bisch.

Really? I've used EVGA for maybe 6-8 years now? They have always been pretty solid for me.

EVGA shill here:

Literally never had a problem with any of their cards in the last 15 years. Quite possibly the only non-Intel company I will buy without a second thought. If you had problems, you might be the outlier.

Their return/salvage policies are usually pretty broad too. You can probably return that card and get a brand new one that won't tard out with next to zero hassle. Though my only experience was a mislabled part a few years ago with regards to their CS, that shit was at my door two days later and worked perfectly. Seems like they are generally on top of it. Maybe their quality has dropped?

I really doubt that an individual who might buy/use half a dozen to a dozen graphics cards and/or motherboards over a period of 5-10 years truly has any idea whatsoever of the failure rate of particular manufacturers, when that failure rate is probably measured in failures per hundred thousand or million in a given year. It's far more likely that any noticeable trend is sheer dumb luck/chance than an actual problem with a particular brand.

Over a three year warranty period I'm pretty sure video cards are measured in failures per 10 or 100.

Really? I'd find that pretty hard to believe. As far as I can recall, I've had a single video card fail in the past 15-20 years, going back to my Rendition Verite 1000 days. And during most of that time I've had 2 PC's used for gaming. Granted most were upgraded not long after year 2, but I'd be surprised if failure rates were really high enough that an individual consumer's anecdotal experience even approaches a valid opinion as compared to true hard data.

Unless you are building PCs for customers on a daily basis, none of us have seen enough of a sampling of hardware to make an accurate judgment call on failure rates.

I've been building PCs for myself and friends for 20+ years, I've probably bought 30-40 video cards over that span(Everything from Matrox/Voodoo1 on up to current cards, probably at least 1 card from every major generation since 3D acceleration was invented) and I've never had a card crap out on me that wasn't just DOA on arrival(and that has only happened twice)

I was a loyal Matrox and Diamond customer back in the early days of 3d acceleration, they were both great, and in the past decade I've bought multiple EVGA and Gigabyte cards and have never had a problem with either. 3 of my last 4 cards have been EVGA and they've been great.

But to be fair, I don't keep a card more than 2-3 years tops, and I don't do crazy overclocks either.

Mist has also repeatedly talked about RMA'ing gear for free upgrades, so... grain of salt.

Like you Eomer, I have not had a card failure in 10+ years. I have used SLI and upgraded around every year or two during that time.

I've used a lot of different companies for components since I built my first PC (with parental help since I was only 10) in 1995 and really haven't had any issues with any company in particular except for Maxtor. Their hard drives are (were? do they even exist anymore?) garbage.
