Well that throws a wrench in everything that we've been hearing and expecting!
But Ut told me I was an idiot for buying my 970GTX for 300 dollars two weeks ago! CUZ PASCALS!

How was Ut wrong? Has this ever happened before?!?!

Anyone familiar at all with building for ultra low budgets? My nephew has 400$ to spend and wants to get in to PC gaming, but I don't even know where to start with that kind of budget. There anyplace to buy Windows that won't be 1/4th of his budget?
What do you have access to that could possibly be reused / repurposed from any old builds? Case, power supply, monitor, mouse, keyboard, HDD? Or is he one of those relatives that you wanna help out but don'treallywant to help out.

To be fair, this is the first peep that Pascal wasn't going consumer this 2Q'16. It's been on track for the last 6 months. This was the first news we have heard otherwise.

I've got an old GTX 770 I can give him to use for a GPU which will help a ton, as all the GPUs I'm seeing in his price range are mostly bollocks. The logistical issue is he's in New Orleans and I'm in Chicago, so I can't really assemble any of it for him, but he's confident him and his friend can do it.

I was able to cobble together this for 422$ and it looks like it'll do the job for him assuming he uses me 770:Newegg.com - Once You Know, You Newegg

Unless I'm missing somethingAMD seems like the way to go in that price range, I3s in the ~100$ range are all dual core and shitty looking. I'm not sure what he wants to do in terms of ssd/hdd but this covers both bases at least.

Would personally say screw the mechanical hard drive if budget is that tight and get a bigger SSD. That's something that isn't really needed for gaming and can be added easily later for media storage. Or put that money toward a better processor. What'll he be doing that requires 16gb of ram? I would personally just get 8 and put that money toward a better processor or better power supply. For instance, in that same line of Power Supplies the 750w fully modular is only 50 bucks after mail in rebate and free shipping. Maybe put the savings into an FX-8300 if you're set on AMD? Might even be able to manage a 8350? Might be able to skimp on the Motherboard as well if he isn't going to be using SLI and/or OCing. I dunno, just not quite the ratio of funding I would be putting into those parts.

The motherboard is the cheapest krait I could find, as to my understanding any of the AM3+ boards that aren't krait don't fully support win8/10 and uefi etc? I'm no expert on AMD anything though, only looking at it cause it's the cheapest there is. Speaking of the 8350 though, microcenter by me has them for 90$ with a 40$ off mobo purchase coupon, so I may go that route and just mail them to him as it's literally half the price of Newegg.

SSD vs HDD is me just hedging my bets as I'm not really sure what he has planned aside from playing Minecract and CoD, but a 250gb SSD isn't a bad option at all. He's like 13 though, figured he might need the platter storage for porn or something.

Thanks for feedback everyone. Below is what I ended up purchasing, plus the 2x8GB RAM. A bit of an upgrade since I actually plan on turning this into a VR machine so got a better PSU and case, then remembered I have about 500gb of HD porn so upgraded the storage.

You don't need a 800W psu for a single vga system. I've had 3 x 7970 (250W cards) on a PC Power&Cooling 750W running at full load for a year (bitcoin shit). Quality >> Quantity, that 650W Seasonic is more than enough for anything you can throw at it.
Ah, I was mostly referring to the possibility of going SLI (referencing Ronne's post) possibly in the future than needing it for the specific build.

Hey i have a quick question regarding my video card, mine just died and I would like some input on what to replace it with. I was using aPNY GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB 192-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16Video Card on dual 23inch monitors. It has 2 DVI ports that work great for me.

Ok so I am on a budget but I still want something that is atleast a little of an upgrade. I was looking at this:GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB WINDFORCE 2X OC EDITION, Basically its an upgrade for me and has the 2 DVI ports plus its only $105 USD shipped and that helps me out alot. Im currently playing alot of Black Desert which my old card handled fine i just want to get back to playing. This is a computer I built a few years ago just for playing World of Warcraft so don't make fun of me lol. I might also double the RAM to 32 if I can afford it.

So what do you guys think? Is there a different card out there that is way better for a similar price or what should I do?

Here are my computer's specs:

Does brand of power supply matter or just the rating? Newegg has their Rosewill gold, fully modular 750w power supply on sale for $80, and thought about getting it, but it's not a SeaSonic or evga. Does it matter?

Specs do more than brand. Rosewill is fine. Just want dual rails that are independent and low variance in voltage output and for it to be rated as far above average load from your components and comfortably above peak load as possible.

Looking on Newegg, most power supplies are showing single rails. A few with 2, and a few more with 4. Should I limit my searches to the 2/4 rails?

No idea what difference it makes in this day and age. I remember 10+ years ago, all the hype was single rail PSUs. Multi-rail was shunned. No idea if or why it would be the exact opposite today. I generally think that PSU tech has evolved so much that unless you go with some cheap Chinese knock-off brand, you can't really go wrong. Get yourself a Seasonic / Corsair or whatever that meets your output demands and forget about it.

Exactly what I did. Gold rated EVGA 750w ps and new msi gtx 970! Can't wait for the upgrades! Gonna be bad ass! My system now is running a Radeon HD 6950, so I hope I'm amazed!

Well there's a distinction, most multi rail units are actually single transformer with shared current limiting down to 240 VA per rail for safety and so they are a pain to keep from tripping. A good unit is multiple independent rails for a few reasons: 1) the less devices drawing current the less noise you get on the circuit which means cleaner energy delivery, 2) overload protection circuits get overloaded quicker running huge amperage single/shared multi rails.

Last I had looked in to it multi-rails were a problem because a lot of the setups couldn't actually push the ~250w across a single rail that video cards were demanding. That was years ago though?

Well, single > ~240W power rails do not follow ATX specifications. Yes, technically if your GPU pulls 300 watts you would need to use two rails. There's a reason GPUs have aux power inputs and it's not because of some mysterious melt down molex has over 240W it's because the rails are supposed to cap at 240VA due to safety (20A) due to the specs for the wiring in the PSUs.

The problem is cheap PSUs are really single transformers using current limiting circuitry to mimic independent rails (IE 300W PSU will turn off either rail if they hit 240W and both if they exceed 300W combined) and a shitty PSU without labelled connections you basically have to test because you don't know which molex is on which rail.

I'm building a new PC but want to hold off on getting a 970/980 with new stuff right around the corner - what's my best bang for the buck for a video card to tide me over?

I see the 750Ti someone linked for only $100ish - is that good enough for BDO and such right now? I don't really want to spring 300 on a 970 if new stuff is coming.
